My dryer stopped working!

I have no idea what's wrong with it, and it's pissing me off. It worked perfectly fine for the last 2 loads of laundry I had in there just a couple hours ago, but now it won't even turn on. I put my clothes in, I shut the door, I push the button to start it, it clicks, and then nothing.

I feel like there's no power getting to it or something, but I can't figure out what to do about it. There's no reset button on the outlet. I checked the fuse box, but nothing is labeled, and all the switches are turned on.

I don't know what to do!

Have you tested the power point by plugging another appliance into it?

It's a large utility outlet. No other plugs will fit.

First thing I always check with dryers is the lint drawer - no idea why this would cause the machine to not work at all, though, unless yours has a shutdown mechanism when the filter is blocked.

I empty the lint trap after every single load. No way that's the problem.

I think it's probably the circuit breaker, but none of the damn things have labels on them, and I don't want to shut off everything in the house just to find one outlet.

Ooh, I did see a couple of those in the fuse box. I've already decided to go to bed and deal with it in the morning, but that will hopefully make my job easier.

For now, though, I go to bed without sheets...because both sets of sheets that I own are currently wet and sitting in the non-working dryer.

I haven't used a dryer since my youngest son was about three years old and that was 26 years ago. I am far too stingy to use the amount of power that they use.

As said, your dryer is one of the double breaker switches. There's probably only two in most modern households, the other one going to your (an) electric oven. Maybe one for a heater/furnace or water heater.

If it's not the breaker it could be some internal component of the dryer which really shouldn't be too expensive to fix since dryers are basically just a motor and a heating unit.

Of course if it is the breaker then the problem you have is what tripped it.

I can't even remember the last time I saw a clothes line! We don't have those around here.

This house is over 100 years old, so who knows where everything goes? My oven is gas and just has a regular plug.

At this point, call your landlord. See if he'll do something in the next day or so.

Also, take any clothes in the wash out and either hang them up or lay them out to dry. Don't leave them in.
