My disposal stinks.

I don't think I have ever been into a house with a garbage disposal unit in my entire life.

Are they really needed at all?

I've never had one either, well apart from the fat cat. The temptation would be to be lazy and shove everything down there. I think they may cause more trouble than they're worth, and by the sound of this thread...;)

If you're a coffee drinker the solution is simple - toss the grinds down the disposal. Coffee, in addition to being the greatest organic substance ever created, is an odor neutralizer.

Yes, the vinegar/baking soda and lemon tricks work too but I had to put a plug in for coffee. ;)

We learned about the lemon trick because in the summer we tend to use the coffee grounds as fertilizer and as part of an anti-ant campaign :)

Yet another example of the awesomeness of coffee. :techman:

Oh they're just great. Say for example you need to scrub a dish that has baked-in food, and you want to do it under the sink. You can just wash all the food down the sink and bam, garbage disposal does the rest. They're just great. The only problem I ever had with one was when I had a roommate who would just haphazardly put shot glasses in the sink when he was done. They would inevitably fall down the drain and then the next person who used the disposal would end up shattering his damn shot glass all over. It didn't work for a week until I finally found a tiny shard of glass in the thing that was jamming it.

To my knowledge, I haven't either - although I have been in plenty of American houses so I'm sure I have, I just didn't realise. I'm not even sure I'd know what to look for.

What's wrong with a bin, anyway?

Disposals also cut down on the amount of rotting food in your trash bins, which is a magnet for rats, roaches, and other vermin. Most of the garbage going into my trash bin is non-edible waste.

This is the main benefit for me. I currently don't have a garbage disposal, but I cook a lot. However, my garbage doesn't fill up very quickly, so the food in my trash can tends to get moldy and starts to smell.

I don't know if I would actually bother to have one installed in a house, but my apartment came with it, so I use it now and then.

I am luckier than you, I guess.

I don't have trouble with mice or rats, because I have a couple of good little mousers around. I compost any leftovers that are suitable and I plan to get a worm farm soon.

The only cockroaches we have in Tasmania are native ones that generally don't live in houses..

I do have a problem with ants getting into my bins outside but I just use surface spray to keep them at bay.

Oh, I've never actually had a problem with insects or rodents. My garbage can just starts to smell really bad, and it stinks up my whole apartment.

It's my own fault for not taking it out often enough, but I have a hard time justifying it if the can is not full.

Step one: Mix colorless, flavorless Gellatin mix with gasoline instead of water (but don't mix more than 3/4 cup worth).
Step two: Pour this substance into the offending disposal.
Step three: Light match.
Step four: Run like hell

Glad to help. Have you figured out what exactly you put down there that was causing the smell?
