My Disco Rewatch, and Where It Lost Me

Oh, I agree that it happens on a more frequent basis, especially in the TNG era. What fascinates me is how there is this weird tension of S31 is both everywhere, yet can't be out in the open. When cloaking devices would clearly serve their purposes in the name of security. And there's a novel were the espionage mission of Kirk and Spock to get a cloaking device is an S31 operation. But, they can't have ships or bases? :vulcan:

I read that novel, actually.
Loved it.
But I think giving them ships and a base...well, that makes them much too in the open for my tastes.

Which is why they contracted; it's reasonable, and fits in with actual growth over static presentation.

Regarding Zora...

I have to agree that it's not a good idea to give an AI total control over the ship. As mentioned, Zora already proved to be a problem on some occasions. Simply giving it the keys to the car and hoping it doesn't crash into a wall is not really level headed thinking.

And before anyone mentions Data... anyone who has seen my posting history knows the reverence I have for Data. (I wouldn't be a science fiction fan, let alone a Trekkie, if not for him.) But as has been mentioned, "Brothers" is exactly why an AI should NOT have total control of a ship without a living person present, or some kind of manual override. Data being able to do what he did would have required multiple people, at the very least, to take over the ship like he did. Instead, it was one person, and that's a bad idea even for an organic being. Would anyone here think it's a good idea for any one single person to have that kind of control over your environment? I think not. So why does Data or Zora get a pass for it, especially when it has been shown on multiple occasions that a machine can be taken over fairly easily?

Having said all that, I do agree that what they did was a very STAR TREK thing to do. So it tracks with the spirit of the franchise in finding a way to work together.
