My Confession

ironnerd

I never really liked TNG.
I never liked the ship, the Captain was actually a little on the dull side. Troy was an effort to watch. I got very tired of Data giving every synonym for every word he ever heard. Wesley was a joke (a kid who saves the crew of the flagship has trouble getting into Starfleet Academy?). Riker... never leave him in command of the ship - ever. Worf and Geordi were two of the more interesting characters. Q was annoying.

I kind of resented that we saw just about nothing of the races from TOS (except Vulcans, Klingons and Romulans).

I'm sorry... but after all these years, I had to come out of the closet.

So, are there any episodes that you actually like?
There are episodes I liked. "Tin Man" was actually good, if a bit whiny). "Legacy" was nice since the crew kinda got played by Tasha's sister. Of course "Darmok" was some very good storytelling. "Inner Light" was interesting, but not very "Trekish" (still a pretty cool story). And I wish more had been done with "Relics".
There were still gems, but you had to wade through "Skin of Evil" and "Imaginary Friend" and "Wesley Saves the Day" and "Let's reconfigure the Deflector to do something cool" too many times (I swear the navigational deflector is Star Fleets "Sonic Screwdriver").

I'm suprised that you think Geordi was one of the more interesting characters!

I think he's super dull. Bland. LeVar Burton, however, is a likeable actor. The visor was kinda neat. I would also call Beverly Crusher bland.

Troi- "an effort to watch"? Yeah, I'd agree on that!

Never, ever liked Data. I read elsewhere that Data went from Naivè to Smug during the run, and that's really astute! (Maybe that's more Spiners arc than Data's, eh?)

Yeah- The Enterprise D is ugly. But it's classic now. And it was a kick whenever a Galaxy Class ship would show up on DS9.

What TNG is, is good memories. A lot of it is pretty mediocre or bland. Seasons 3 & 4 were pretty solid.

I'll agree on seasons 3 and 4, they were the most watchable.
I'm not saying I "HATE" TNG... I just didn't get as much out of it as a lot of other fans. DS9, however, was really enjoyable.

When I was stationed n Korea, my parents would send me a VHS tame once a month with Star Trek and Wings (discovery channel). My squad would pile into my room and watch it. I was not even allowed to fast forward through commercials. So I agree in the good memories aspect.

I like TNG and I find it hard to criticize it because it's great memories and I adore the cast. That said, the proof is kind of sad for me: I have really struggled with my blu-ray rewatch. I'm just finding it hard to keep a consistent interest.

It's like 50/50. Half the episodes are great fun and the other half are just plodding and uninteresting. That's not a great ratio. I'd still generally defend the show or movies to any outsiders...but amongst fellow fans, that's my "confession" as well.

I was stationed in Korea and my brother sent me a tape of him flipping channels. He was an annoying jerk then as well as now.

We had Next Gen on the channel you could watch where I was stationed. I didn't watch it though.

Well..... Bye!

;)

Not sure why you had a compelling need to admit this, and I disagree, as do (I'm sure) many others in this forum. But it's okay. You're no less a part of the Trek fandom than those who are TOS-only or strict Niners or those who love the Prime but not the nu, or vice-versa (if vice-versa exists?). It's cool. :)

5th/6th episodes, the 'prise looks like a grey and dull office. With 'em sittin' around the boardroom table. Zzzzz. The sparkle of the first/second season atheistic is gone. And I loathe the in-episode track after Ron Jones got the sack in the middle of the run. Absolutely LOATHE it. Picard also became very, very stuffy character for a time there as well.

That's not to say they weren't good episodes in those seasons, there's excellent ones in every season but I certainly see why people might get turned off by it.

But I'm not looking for a duplicate of TOS nor am I dogmatic on what constitutes Trek. Looking to emulate TOS is impossible because its a product of its own time and can't be replicated.

I'm not a fan, either. I actually prefer the first couple seasons, and I loved Pulaski as the Doctor. I wanted Picard to stay a Borg, Riker to become Captain, with Shelby as his XO.

I also wished Generations had been written by a TOS fan, where Kirk pulls rank (like usual) and takes command of the newest Enterprise by the end, saves the day, and closes the movie tracking down the surviving members of his old crew, and the rest of the movie series is a blended cinematic epic Trek franchise.

Kind of the same here, I've gone back to a few specific episodes, but even though the whole series is now on Netflix I've never felt the need to watch it all again.

But wouldn't Picard outrank Kirk? Captain of the ship with tactical superiority and all that?

I'm pretty sure he meant over Harriman on the -B. I'm also pretty sure that he doesn't grok that Kirk *not* doing that was logical character development given that the last time he did that, he got a training crew tied up in a personal vendetta and a bunch of those kids (and Spock) killed.

The fan in me would have liked to see Kirk go out in a blaze of glory on the bridge of an Enterprise. But I've grown to appreciate the way he went in Generations: not as a cartoon character, but some almost random and at least partially undignified way. Because like it or not, that all too often describes the end of the real "human adventure" for all of us. At least he got to go out semi-heroic - better than most get.

And then, for those of us who wanted the fanwank, too, we can read the Shatnerverse books. ;)

For me, the fact it went unrecognised made it more heroic. It was never about adventure, or recognition, the only thing that mattered was saving lives.

Next Gen has a handful of solid gold episodes (like "Yesterday's Enterprise", "Best of Both Worlds") but a LOT of chaff in-between, like "A Masterpiece Society"

My confession would be that I think Picard is sexy.
How can a 50+ year old bald white guy be sexy?
I'll never understand it.
I was watching an episode directed by Frakes, the one where Data makes his daughter, what was up with the wrapper top on Picard's Jammie's being all open and going for the exposure angle in the shot of him sleeping in his quarters??
I'm not complaining, just seems like s weird shot for Frakes to be directing..........

Picard has lost his command to higher ranking officers before.... why would what ship he is Captain of at the time or its capabilities matter? If there is no other way, they could have just killed Picard... but I'm sure there would (could) be some Star Fleet loophole that by era/age/rank/experience would allow Kirk as the superior officer to pull rank and take command of the ship.

Nope, I meant exactly that. The beginning with the "B" (and his hesitance to take command) should have foreshadowed his getting or taking command during the movie and/or climax. What he learned in II thru IV was that he DID belong on the Enterprise, that being anything but a Captain was a waste....and what he learned after VI (yet again) is that retirement *bored* him. Getting a new lease on life in the 24th could have been rejuvenating. Bringing his style and half his crew with him could have shaken up the alpha quadrant quite a bit. As Janeway pointed out (in the only Voyager episode i've ever watched more then once), those were different days.... cowboy diplomacy and all.

We should have had a blended film series from that point on. There is absolutely no reason Shatner couldn't have continued to portray Kirk through the 90s and early 2000s. Generations was terrible. Stewart failed to carry that movie franchise on his shoulders. Fail.
