Must I put away ALL my childish things? (grown-up Calvin & Hobbes)

I'm not disagreeing with the Apostle Paul in 1 Cor 13:11. After all, I don't think he's really talking about all the things that bring us joy when we're kids. Of coruse, that may be a discussion for another time. As for THIS time, I'm referring to something I've recently found: versions of Calvin & Hobbes grown up. It all started when I Stumbled Upon this comic:

Hence the title of this thread.

Then my son sent me a link to a few more:

and perhaps the most poignant one of them all.....

I guess I'm just getting older, and maybe missing some of those "lazy Sunday afternoons". Maybe I'm just tired from not enough sleep (late-night chats can be murder on you at times!). Or perhaps it's simply that I miss the Calvin & Hobbes comics. I can say that my reluctance to put away at least SOME of those "childish things" has forged a very strong bond with my kids. And that includes the college-aged son who sent me off on this in the first place.

My 12 year old son loves Calvin & Hobbes. Last summer the local YMCA had a Halloween in July event. We spiked his hair and sent him with his stuffed tiger. None of the others - including the college-age counselors - knew who Calvin and Hobbes were. :(

C&H is far from childish. It's meant for grown-ups ... er, adults. :D

(Although kids can love it on their own level, too)

Calvin and Hobbes rocked. I was so saddened when the strip was concluded. As for the Apostle Paul -- eh, let's just say some people were old grumps.

I love Calvin and Hobbes. It worked on one level when I was younger and didn't get all the jokes, and whole 'nother level when I grew up and could actually get the jobs that I didn't get as a kid. Plus, nothing like reading Calvin and Hobbes when you're having a shittacular day or just feeling crudy.

They just don't make comics like they used to.

That is a fake, AFAIK. It's not a real Calvin & Hobbes strip.

I know. ;)

That comic and this collection are simply how other artists see the characters in later years. A wistful look if you will, at the time when life was easier and contrasting it with when society seems to force us to grow up.

Well, in Paul's defense, there is a huge difference between childish and childlike behaviors.

I know that C&H are fictional, but I would rather he have the life in the first link. The last link makes me sad. :(

I love Calvin & Hobbes. Have since I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. I still have all the books kept right next to my bed. Its a timeless, ageless comic and can be enjoyed by both adults and children.

Incidentally, I had a dream a few weeks ago that Bill Watterson had started making Calvin & Hobbes again, only for some reason the comics were now peppered with profanity and obscenity. Go figure.

Yeahh.... I know. Despite my actions to the contrary at times, I try to emphasize that difference.

It does me as well. Lately, our family has been going through some stressful times... and it's at times like those that we tend to seek some security and strength in what makes us feel good. So perhaps this resonated with me because of the current day.

I remember an urban legend going around for awhile that it was real, though.
Huh... I had no idea. not that I keep up with all my urban legends, but I hadn't heard that story. Hadn't even seen the comic until a few days ago.

my favorite C&H mashup :D

Why should you ever give up anything you enjoy as long as it isn't hurting anyone? Who cares if it is childish? Just because you're a grown up doesn't mean you have to sit around all day watching C-Span or something..

I just reread my Complete Calvin & Hobbes recently. Love it love it love it love it. I intend to keep on loving it well into my dotage!

This is the time to repeat my (entirely unfounded) theory that Frazz is actually Calvin as a grown up.

Exactly.

If someone wants to play with toys, fine. If they want to collect action figures, fine. So long as they keep their priorities in life straight, and they're not hurting people then fuck it leave 'em be.

I definitely don't consider myself too old (I turn 39 in two months) to like VeggieTales. I don't care if it's a cartoon, I think it's hilarious *and* uplifting.

Plus, I like the Silly Songs. :p
