Was Star Trek premature to mention him? Should they stick to fictional and dead people in the future?

Don’t care. It’s all for fun. It doesn’t need to be hyper-accurate. We already have a complete “future history” timeline that never happened with the Eugenics Wars, Botany Bay, Jackson Roykirk launching the Nomad probe, Voyager 6, etc etc etc.

The last thing I give a shit about is an offhand and harmless mention in DSC.

It’s just a fun Easter egg.

Could they (in universe) be referencing a different Musk?

    Lorca specifically mentions Elon Musk.

Oh. Still, someone being dumb about shit-ass twitter shouldn't in the long run influence how history views their contributions to science, though these days he certainly seems capable of fucking those up as well.

But Lorca was from the Mirror Universe, where everyone is evil.

    Now it all makes sense.

Yes. Musk when mentioned had a company that had canceled Red ~~Mars~~ Dragon* and just was spewing a lot of hot air. Musk does not fit neatly into any Star Trek chronology or timeline with Dy's flying in the 90s. Musk would be irrelevant and not even a player in Trek at all, and even with a new timeline, there's no reason for the Federation to care about a corpo space... 'player' by the 2250s. It felt forced and I literally nailed that as one more reason not to watch STD past s1 due to that FYS attitude.

It was an attempt to include one contemporary IRL person in a list of extraordinary/“wunderkind” space flight pioneers viewers could identify with and anchor Discovery a little bit in reality.
    They chose poorly.

I am not sure, there is and ever will be again someone who justifiably could see eye to eye with the other mentioned legends.

but then again, Cochrane didn’t really live up to his reputation in either appearance.

let’s take it as a lesson to not build up your hero’s too much.
we as the viewers happen to have a ton more context for Musk, whereas people in 300+ years might only have a very idealized recollection of the guy.
Probably not the intend of the scene, but it says something about us humans anyway.

Then again, Lorca WAS from the MU. Perhaps the Mirror Musk wasn't the colossal douchebag that ours is?

Yeah they fucked up by referencing him. Not Trek's first fuckup and won't be their last.

They should put a Twitter button on the Captain's chair in tribute.

Lorca is from the mirror universe. Maybe that's why.

But I'm not surprised the same "SCIENCE IS SO FUCKING COOL" writers worshipped Elon Musk.

    Science is so fucking cool.
But Musk doesn’t strike me as a science cheerleader.
He is the guy yelling at his scientist employees that Tony Stark managed to build it in a cave, with a bunch of scraps.

He's telling them to sit on the floor and work hard:

Elon Musk calls on all Twitter designers, engineers doing software to sit on his floor of HQ for 'dense and intense' work (msn.com)

I'm not getting Scotty vibes here. But maybe that's why engineering doesn't have many chairs.

Well, I wouldn't call DSC 'amazing.' Not by a long shot. Still, I agree that it was a dumb reason to stop watching the show.
