Rick Berman seemed to create his own genre of music. But I do not think the old musicians should be condemned just be cause they worked for Berman, etc. I guess I am fine with what ever the music turns out to be, as long as it fits the scene.

All of the past Trek TV productions have used multiple composers. It's difficult on a TV schedule to have one person write all of the music, particularly if full orchestrations need to be made. Unless it is gonna be an electronic score, there will most likely be a few composers on the show.

Also, the TNG composers can write in many styles as any good composer can do. The reason many of the TNG scores are bland is because Berman hated music with too much melody, rhythm, and emotion. In fact, Ron Jones was sacked because his scores were too musical.

It sounds a bit dated, but I rather like Jones' score for the TNG episode Booby Trap. Reminds me a bit of Denis McCarthy in the 80's.

I know he's busy, but I would love if Bear McCreary did the score for the new series. The music on BSG was incredible, and while I don't watch the series, I heard the theme song to Black Sails last week and that might be the best dramatic theme song on TV today.
I would love that. It's a pipe dream, sure, but I'd be thrilled.

I'm partial to a mixture of classical, electronic and metal.

Ambient as hell; mysterious electronic music, alien choral chants, blasts of distorted guitar, epic orchestral.

Or would that be stepping on Farscape's toes? :)

Bear McCreary would be cool (I love ethnic instruments like BSG), but since I've heard his work now in about four different shows, I would be interested in maybe having other people too - and judging from Bryan Fuller's rampant love for the guy, and rampant love for film soundtracks, I still think Hannibal's Brian Reitzell is most likely.

If it's McCreary, I hope he busts out everything - sitar, erhu, orchestra, tibetan horns, synthesizers.

^ I don't want choral music.

EDIT:
To give a more detailed answer, my response is emotional, not logical. Vocal music in sci-fi is generally used to create a mystical feeling, but Trek is science fiction, not fantasy, so I don't want the music to give the sense of a supernatural universe.
This is a general rule, but I would allow vocal music for scenes suggestive of ancient heritage, e.g. mystical rituals of Vulcans, or battle rites of Klingons.

I'm just hoping for a theme song that is actually longer than 5 seconds. Sadly The TV theme song is becoming extinct these days and have been replaced with what used to called "TV bumpers".

Given the medium, I think it's likely that we'll still get opening titles - precise episode length is less of an issue for streaming. Looking at Netflix Originals like OITNB or House of Cards, they have full title sequences. It can always be cut down if the show is broadcast on regular TV in the future.

Too bad Goldsmith and Horner have passed away. Maybe John Williams can write the theme music (I think he did it for the original Lost in Space).
He did do the Theme for all 3 seasons of Lost in Space as well as handful of episodes from the show.

If Kurtzman is involved in picking the theme composer, Michael Giacchino could be an interesting choice. He's done TV work for him in the past, and obviously wrote the music for the JJ movies.

Christopher Franke needs to come back to doing SF again.

His work on Babylon 5 was magnificent and paved the way for the likes of McCreary creating repeating themes, motifs and actual suites for the show.

But in all reality it will likely be someone that Fuller has worked with before.

McCreary himself would be unlikely given he is working currently on Black Sails / Agents of Shield / Outlander / Damien / The Walking Dead plus his video-game and film work in between.

The one thing that I would love to see, which is rarely seen in TV is honest evolution of themes. Whomever gets chosen, I'd love to see them create cast themes that evolve as the characters do. Somwhat akin to what Williams did with Vader/Anakins theme or Lukes.

Hugo - Franke for the win :techman:

I'm hoping to get a meeting with the producers about the music. In the past Trek series there have always been multiple composers, and I'd like to have a go at doing at least one episode. Who knows what direction they will go in for style, but the style of the Trek feature film scores are classic and will not soon sound dated. I could see doing something like ST:TMP or TWOK with a smaller orchestra. (TV budgets don't allow for an 80-piece+ orchestra) TOS usually had less than 30 players.

Good Luck Andy!!!

I know you would do a great job in the TOS style
