What is J.J. Abrahms preference about the music for a Star Trek TV series? I remember Rick Berman loathing suspenseful music but does J.J. Abrahms feel the same way? I am hoping for the music style of:

  • Fred Steiner,
  • George Romanis,
  • Ron Jones,
  • Jay Chattaway,
  • Don Davis,
  • John Debney,
  • Paul Baillargeon.

I know he's busy, but I would love if Bear McCreary did the score for the new series. The music on BSG was incredible, and while I don't watch the series, I heard the theme song to Black Sails last week and that might be the best dramatic theme song on TV today.

For all the show's flaws, I loved the music for Stargate Universe. It was a world away from the SG-1 and SGA music. I'd like to see a new Trek do something similarly different.

Too bad Goldsmith and Horner have passed away. Maybe John Williams can write the theme music (I think he did it for the original Lost in Space).

I'm hoping to get a meeting with the producers about the music. In the past Trek series there have always been multiple composers, and I'd like to have a go at doing at least one episode. Who knows what direction they will go in for style, but the style of the Trek feature film scores are classic and will not soon sound dated. I could see doing something like ST:TMP or TWOK with a smaller orchestra. (TV budgets don't allow for an 80-piece+ orchestra) TOS usually had less than 30 players.

I am hoping the score will be distinctive. Something where you can hear a few bars and immediately recognise it and feel the flavour of the show. As opposed to the generic scores most shows get.
In practical terms, maybe a rich mix of electronica and orchestral.

One possibility would be Alexandre Desplat. Really like his work. Has great variety. Here are two samples:

JJ Abrams hired Michael Giacchino who I thought was a good composer for his films, and I thought his work was great for several PIXAR films and television. I wouldn't mind him being hired to compose the new series. I definitely do not want any of the Berman composers returning because they had a style which was identifiable to that Production. That was the past, it's time to have music which represents new Trek; I think Giacchino's vibe should be the next step.

Bryan Fuller has collected film scores since he was a kid.

He is gonna put a ton of thought into this; he is gonna make sure its special.

But I think the most likely choice will be the guy he used on Hannibal.

He adores the work that was done for that show.

All of the past Trek TV productions have used multiple composers. It's difficult on a TV schedule to have one person write all of the music, particularly if full orchestrations need to be made. Unless it is gonna be an electronic score, there will most likely be a few composers on the show.

Also, the TNG composers can write in many styles as any good composer can do. The reason many of the TNG scores are bland is because Berman hated music with too much melody, rhythm, and emotion. In fact, Ron Jones was sacked because his scores were too musical.

Dennis McCarthy CAN make suspenseful music, but only if instructed to do so. Examples are:
  • Conspiracy
  • The Hunted
  • Identity Crisis
  • The Mind's Eye
The worst composer from Rick Berman seems to be David Bell.

But I guess I don't necessarily agree that all past composers should not be hired. Any early Star Trek musicians would be great. Perhaps TOS films such as Cliff Eidelman.

And, considering non-Trek musicians, what about Jerry Martin?

None of Berman's composers were bad but there was a theme to their music which was in tone with TNG world including spinoffs. As for you not agreeing shows how influential those past composers are to you. That's the problem.
When TNG came out it started with some recognizable crew from TOS series, but as the show progressed there were not even a sign of what transpired from those early beginnings. Once Berman took control he pushed forward and didn't look back.
This has to happen in order for the franchise to be his, with his own vision and insights.
I want the same for the new production. I would like new composers to create something different than sound same old, same old.
