NBA Live got its ass handed to it by 2K Sports this year, and it wasn't just because Jordan was on the cover.
I think, with sports games, that if there is no change to the game engine (and there often isn't for years at a time with games like Madden), that the new year's version should be available as a DLC update at a discounted price to people with the old version. There's no reason they couldn't do it, they just won't. Nothing but new menu screens and an updated roster for $60 is the reason some people find the sports releases a bit wonky, though I think we all understand why they do it and why people buy them.
With FPS games like CoD, you're getting a completely new single player campaign and a dozen all new maps and new weapons, graphic upgrade, etc. It's a true sequel as opposed to just an update. As long as the quality is there I don't see the problem. It's when the quality goes down the shitter (like with CoD3) that people question the logic.
If a CoD game comes out that has a 3 hour long campaign mode and a bunch of reworked maps that were featured in the previous year with no new game modes, people really won't eat it up. The new MoH game isn't doing very well because it's decidedly uninspired.
