Multiplayer Military Shooters

NBA Live got its ass handed to it by 2K Sports this year, and it wasn't just because Jordan was on the cover.

I think, with sports games, that if there is no change to the game engine (and there often isn't for years at a time with games like Madden), that the new year's version should be available as a DLC update at a discounted price to people with the old version. There's no reason they couldn't do it, they just won't. Nothing but new menu screens and an updated roster for $60 is the reason some people find the sports releases a bit wonky, though I think we all understand why they do it and why people buy them.

With FPS games like CoD, you're getting a completely new single player campaign and a dozen all new maps and new weapons, graphic upgrade, etc. It's a true sequel as opposed to just an update. As long as the quality is there I don't see the problem. It's when the quality goes down the shitter (like with CoD3) that people question the logic.

If a CoD game comes out that has a 3 hour long campaign mode and a bunch of reworked maps that were featured in the previous year with no new game modes, people really won't eat it up. The new MoH game isn't doing very well because it's decidedly uninspired.

I wonder how long before they dump single player and just make a pure online Battlefield type game or a Western MMO.

There's one in the works-but as a compliment to COD FPS not as a replacement. Kinda like Halo Wars was...

I play COD and have since 3. Sure, Clint G, a lot is "re-packaging" but the tweaks and added features breathe new life into it. Frankly, I could have gotten a new COD in the summer-I was DONE with MW2 in terms of it driving me to boredom. My goal is always to max the prestige-and I almost quit on that iteration. BOps has brought some "new" to the table with more flexible perks, added content etc so my playing time is fun again.

I'm open to a new shooter, though. Homefront looks promising but even if its a great game it will need an audience to make MP worth my time. That's the toughest thing about the COD/MOH series-they have huge audiences and at $60 ea no one wants to risk branching out. I watch and listen and wait, though. Something will be along eventually...

That's the whole reason behind Combat Training being introduced in Black Ops. They want to try and convince the people who never play online to give it a go, so they've given them a place to try it out or practice without being intimidated by an actual game filled with CoD veterans, calling them "fags" and "noobs".

It's still good fun to fuck around in with friends, and you can test out new guns/loadouts before you play for real, but the main idea is to attract new online players.

Combat Training is the whole reason I'm going to buy this game. I really enjoy the campaigns of the COD games, but Multiplayer just isn't much fun for me, because 1) I'm an adult with a family, friends and a life and I don't have that much time for games, so compared to a lot of the 12-year-olds out there who can spend 9 hours/day on the game, I really suck and tend to die every 3 seconds on multiplayer shooter games; 2) I don't have many good friends who are console gamers, so if I want to play multiplayer I'm forced to play with random players; and 3) I really don't enjoy hearing racial/ethnic/sexual slurs screamed by the 14-year-olds who tend to dominate the online shooter scene.

So recreating the multiplayer experience with bots in Combat Training sounds pretty much perfect for someone like me, and brilliant on Treyarch's part.
