MTV Order US Skins Remake

US network MTV has ordered a 10-episode season of Skins, eight months after acquiring international formats rights to the UK teen drama from All3Media International.

E1 Entertainment came onboard in December to coproduce a pilot, and the Canadian producer-distributor will now make the full season with Company Pictures and Stormdog. The latter was set up by show creator Brian Elsey and his son Jamie Brittain to produce the original series.

MTV confirmed that the new show, scheduled to air next January, will be set in Baltimore and that teenagers will write the scripts, as with the UK series. The original, which aired on diginet E4 in the UK, follows a group of hard-drinking and drug-taking teens.

So as E4's version goes in to series 5 it looks like we're getting a US version. I don't see Skins working on a non-premium cable network, but I guess we'll see how it goes.

Didn't MTV have some sort of late-night teen drama once before about kids who couldn't keep their hands off one another?

I think MTV once tried to do some sort of late night, teen-centric soap called Undressed, if that's what you're referring to. It had a revolving door of characters and stories. It was quite silly, IIRC, and didn't last for more than a year or two.

I'm not familiar with the series Skins, but based on the article posted, it sounds like another trashy, superficial, pointless show... which is right up MTV's alley. I'm so glad I stopped paying attention to MTV like 15 years ago.

Skins is better than it sounds. It's one of the most realistic teen dramas out there.

Skins is has realistic has a sober Scot. Even so it was ok the first two season. The third one was just boring and the fifth one was pointless.

Yep, Skins sounds like a trashy teen drama, but it's better. Each episode (without going over the top) focuses on one character, so it's halfway to an anthology series, and it's willing to be unexpectedly harsh. Few series would simply dump the entire cast two years in (because that's the logic of a series set in the last two years of high school), and it's willing to kill major characters and then deal with the consequences.
Imagine 90210 if it was made by the Mad Men team, really.
