MST3K: The Movie

Plain Simple

Just saw Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Movie. I've never seen the tv series, but heard a lot of good things about it, so I was going in with high expectations. I found the movie to be a bit of a letdown. It got a few chuckles out of me, but on the whole it couldn't really keep my attention. And the 'original parts', i.e. the parts in which they're not watching "This Island Earth", were incredibly cheesy. Perhaps it's not my kind of humour or perhaps I should have paid better attention, but I was a bit disappointed. Is the tv series better/funnier?

Btw, did they never have legal problems with basically using complete films with a bit of window dressing and presenting it as something new?

The movie's humor was a bit simplified for general audiences. I liked it well enough, though it isn't up to the quality of the series. Try to find a copy "Mitchell", "Prince of Space", or "Space Mutiny" to see MST3K firing on all cyinders.

For a cheap way of hearing MST3K riffing at its best, I suggest going to Rifftrax.com (created by the stars and writers of MST3K) and download a track for a movie you already own. The riffing is the same as in MST3K, though the skits are not present-- but you didn't like those anyway.

Btw, did they never have legal problems with basically using complete films with a bit of window dressing and presenting it as something new?
No. They secured the rights to the movies that they riffed.

The movie is not them at their best. Go watch the series proper to get a better feel for it. But, honestly if you didn't care for the cheese, then the series might not do it for you. As far as Rifftrax go, that's not quite the same. MST3K is about bad B grade and Z grade movies, not bad A movies. Still, there's the Film Crew featuring the latter day cast with skits and B movies and there's Joel's effort Cinematic Titanic which is like MST3K but with a lot more people riffing. Try Youtube for clips.

Crow's "Earth vs. Soup" bit was a commentary on how the suits interfered with the moviemaking process. None of the creative team were super happy with how it turned out.

I must admit I've only ever seen the German version of the film, which is hilarious. So I can't really comment on the original version. As others have said, there's a lot of MST3K on youtube to get an impression.

The movie wasn't them at their best. It was simplified, greatly, for massed audiences.

There's countless episodes of the show that're far funnier.

Short of getting a hold of or buying the box sets (I'd reccomend the box-set with Time Chasers, Boggy Creek II and Touch of Satan on it. (Volume 5)

You may have to Amazon it.

If you're not willing to make that large of an investment, check out this site where bootlegs of the episodes not on DVD can be purchased.

There's countless episoides in there that can be named that are far funnier than the movie was. "Final Sacrafice", "Riding With Death", plenty. Each DVD only costs around $3 so a much more disposable investment.

-This site has allowed me to bump up my collection from the retail DVDs to nearly now having the entire series so it's safe.

It should be noted the show has 3 eras. The Joel Era, The Mike Comedy Central Era and the Mike Sci-Fi era.

Joel started the series on "The Comedy Channel" (which became Comedy Central) after it was picked up from a Minnesota local station (KTMA season -which is.... rough) his humor tends to be a lot more whimsical and the Host Segments have a strong "Saturday Morning Kid's Show" feel to it. Mike picks up as host in mid-Season 5 and the whimsy is toned down quite a bit. The show left CC at the end of the truncated Season 7 when it was picked up by SciFi. Sci-Fi's years are much debated, and mostly it seems disliked, by fans. Mostly because the host segments are seen to be a lot lamer (new "Mads") and the movies have a lot less variety.

Personally, I quite like the Sci-Fi years.

Joel's humor as I said is a lot more whimsical and light, I think Mike's humor is much more sharper and biting -he also had a different relationship with the bots.

There's a handfull of episodes that're just terrible, but for the most part I'd think you'll get a good laugh out a great many of these episodes.

Good luck!

I think one of those was meant to be Comedy Central (or HA! as it was once called). :)

No, Comedy Central was a merger of two cable networks, The Comedy Channel and HA! MST3K was part of the original lineup of The Comedy Channel, and was the only part of that lineup that survived to become part of Comedy Central when the merger occurred. It was never on HA!

What? No. Wait...what?

I'm sorry to the OP, but if he only chuckled "a few times" at that movie then there's no hope. It's clearly not his cup of tea.

There's no point in suggesting anything else. He's not going to like any of them. There's nothing wrong with that, but let's be clear. This is like someone asking: "I don't like movies with aliens in them. Is there a Star Wars movie I would like?"

The answer is: Sorry, but you're out of luck.

I find The Movie very mediocre, at best.

If it's someone's first venture into MST3K I can see how it wouldn't impress much. I think it'd be "safer" for the OP to see some of the stronger, and more classic, episodes before him writing off the entire franchise.

Well, he can try, but if that movie couldn't even hold his attention, I don't know that there's much hope.

You think it's mediocre. But did you consider turning it off halfway through?

I suspect that that thought never crossed your mind on the first viewing.

It kind-of did, actually. It just didn't hold my interest, but I eventually slaved through it. Now, granted, it wasn't as bad as say Hamlet or The Incredible Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies.

But I don't think they're as on their game as they are in the series (and BTS reports have said that the riffs were made more general for the wider audiences) and I just didn't "feel" the host segments, but I'm not a huge fan of them anyway aside from some exception. One exception being Time Chasers' given the time-paradox theme of them and anoter being "Last of the Wild Horses" (a very mediocre episode) because of the tribute it is to TOS' "Mirror, Mirror."

I'm a huge fan of MST3K, love the series. I honestly think it's one of the most brillant shows made in my generation, is pretty consistantly funny and most viewers can latch on to it. I just don't think the movie is the right place to start for new viewers. It's not them at their sharpest.

Well to be fair, even in the series the host segments around that time were pretty weak. Joels leaving really hurt them in that respect. Things started getting downright painful once Frank departed. The actual riffing was still pretty good though.

IMO the host segments didn't really start to get back on track until the show got back to Earth (Pearl got her castle, etc).
