Mr. Scotts natural voice

Well, there's fact, and then there's the heart !
I read an interesting article vis Brexit, where Uk citizens really think of themselves as English or Scottish, not in their heart of hearts as "British."

ring true with any British citizenz oot theirrr? (Rolling my r there)
Probably true for the indigneous peoples. Not sure of other ethnic groups but not many British born black folks consider ourselves 'English', (probably cos our parents/grandparents were treated like shit when they arrived in the U.K) its funny how Black people from Spanish speaking nations consider themselves Hispanic but their English speaking cousins, we don't consider ourselves Anglos lol

I think it’s cos some of those families have been there longer, overall. (Though racism does seem more overt in the Southern European countries too, despite or perhaps because of that.) Lenny Henry was always big in his jokes about being from the midlands, so I think it does vary a lot person to person. Most of my friends were Londoners before most things, and do consider themselves English, but I think we were either a lucky group or a lucky generation. My best friend is more stereotypically ‘English’ than me, despite being second generation from Barbados. He attends folk festivals (I refer to his taste in that area as ‘War Violins’ since it basically sounds like Dwarven Heavy Metal.) practices traditional British Martial Arts and sword fighting (as well as the Japanese ones) and stuff like that. He is seriously cool, and his brothers are very similar. I think it’s possible we...in sense of we as in the country now, not me and my buddy...are easier to be affected by the American experience of race relations (as it were) in a very fast unfiltered way due to its pervasiveness in English Speaking culture. America Sneezes and we catch cold sort of thing. The other European countries with a mixed population pick up a sort of mutated version. (I was suggested we relabel the ‘French Hip Hop’ section where I worked as ‘eep ‘op’ as an aside. It’s funny how we label it differently. Or did. Back then.) It’s also true that a lot of Caribbean islands are already full of ‘British’ culture as a hang over....we can all whine about the cricket and drink Guiness as some kind of ancient rite, but instead of aiding a sort of cultural melting pot for some people, that just led to strife. I dunno. As I have said a hundred times, I think something went wrong in the early 2ks somewhere, and we started rolling back stuff that was just starting to work well. We are probably still more ‘integrated’ at a working class level than anywhere in the world, particularly in London, but outside...not so sure. And there’s all the gang stuff and idiots like Tim Westwood, and then stuff and stuff and stuff. I think it’s made me into a grumpy old man before my time, just despairing and wondering where we went wrong. Maybe it’s immigrants that are the problem....I.e bloody northerners coming into London and stealing all the management jobs ;p (hint of truth...most outright hidden racists I met were all from northern cities coming down to work in the smoke. I was genuinely shocked at some of the pub talk when they thought they were ‘among friends’.)

Sigh.
Maybe it will get better again.

London is a unique case, its one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world if not number one on that list. I think we should declare our independence :techman:
