Mr Data

How could I forget Inheritance? Maybe the best episode of the series. That's the best Data episode. Hard to have a dry eye at the end when he calls her mother (I also like that Spiner also played Dr. Soong as he did in Brothers). An episode worth its own post.

Data's Day.

Not only was it a good Data episode, but it was nice to see a "day in the life" type episode.

With every episode featuring an "intergalactic adventure" featuring drama, space confrontations, diplomatic drama, away missions, and complicated situations, it was nice to slow down for a change and see what a regular day aboard a starship could be like.

Courtroom dramas suck, usually, because they're nothing but cheap talk. Sooner or later, though, TNG was going to have to have one and it turned out not to be as insufferable as it could've been.

Well, TNG also had "The Drumhead", and for my money it and "Measure Of A Man" are two of the series' best. True, they could have been huge bore-fests, but top-notch writing and acting made for compelling drama.

I think a big part of that was Patrick Stuart. The way Picard was, talk was his realm, and he was strong in his element. I also liked how he handle the Sheliac, not a courtroom, but still very much in the same idea, a legal contract that he was able to master the situation.

I pick Birthright I for the Data episode. It was much better than the Worf part and deserved to explored much more than it was.

I can't believe that no one has yet listed the best of the best, IE MASKS!!!

That one was really good!

I also enjoyed A Fistful Of Datas.

"You got it partner!" (in response to an order from Riker)

Favorite episode, probably The Offspring

Favorite scenes on the other hand. Well, I think it's rare that I enjoy when Data is the butt of the joke, because it reduces him to being one dimensional, but one instance when it works is "An Ode To Spot", especially since they talk about it later & have it as a learning experience for him

Now when he's used one dimensionally for dramatic effect, it can be pretty chilling. His last scenes with Kivas Fajo & Dr. Kila Marr are equally ass kicking in how hard the door slams on them both, when he is just not there emotionally. Dr. Marr looked like she might go slit her wrists, at the thought that her son weeps for her beyond the grave

I agree that 'Masks' is an excellent episode. I do disagree that it's a 'Data' episode, as he spends very little of the episode as Data. He is usually inhabited by various members of whatever race it is that takes over the computer systems. Picard remarks that Data has transcended the human experience by experiencing the entirety of an ancient alien culture, and Data's basically just like 'Hmm.' No development as a result of the experience.

Great episode, but more of a Spiner episode than a Data episode.

I just watched "Masks" the other day with my girlfriend, who hadn't seen it since it first aired. For some reason this episode gets a lot of flack, some of it deserved, but not all of it. It's a fun Picard-solving-an-archaeological-mystery show, as enacted by Data being possessed. It'd have been better if it had been spread over two episodes I think, with more breathing room for the concepts presented to be more fully developed. But I agree, it's a fun show and one that's uniquely "Star Trek."

I really like the 'gangly' and awkward Data in Season 1, he just seems so innocent and naïve.

Like rattling-off a list of ancient Earth flags and their colours in The Last Outpost and then being confused when Picard told him to cease. But you started it, Sir... says his face.

As the years progressed, I felt that Data matured to a rather serious character who had lost much of his off-the-cuff spontaneity. Sort of the opposite of Spock's development.

Favorite Data Episode? There's so many so I'll do 5:

The Offspring
In Theory
Brothers
Measure of a Man
Thine Own Self

And honorable mention to Masks for Spiners great acting job in that episode.

Here's an interesting thought I just had, while chatting about parenting in the Riker thread. When we think of Data procreating, we always assume another android, like Lal, but if Data ever formed a coupling with another biological being, like he did with Jenna D'Sora, what's to say he couldn't use Soong's DNA and create a new Soong offspring, so his mate could reproduce naturally?

Data looks like Soong. He was created by him. By all rights, he could conceivably father a new Soong line. Who's to say that "Fully functional" didn't also include a built in reproductive factor that would do that very thing? The intention was to make him as human as possible. That would seem to be a prominent part of being one.

We never hear about Soong having had any biological offspring. Perhaps he couldn't or preferred not to, and opted for this option instead. It's ultimately just as valid. What a huge change to human evolution that would be. My granddad was an android built by my great granddad

I imagine that Soong would've focused on creating android life too much to want to bother with raising biological children. If he did have any children, I'd imagine he had a very poor relationship with them.
The possibility that Soong equipped Data with reseviors of semen for him to father children with Soong's DNA....wow I never would've thought of that. It's a highly imaginative suggestion anyways. Data having biological children that would have a much shorter life span than their father is a pretty sad thought though.
I would be interested in seeing Data exploring romance again now that he has emotions. I'm way behind in reading the newer novels, but I'm not aware of that having come up.

I'm checking out some season 1 episodes as well. I might look into season 2 as well.

I thought 'Thine Own Self' isn't a real Data ep because he's mentally handicapped...?

Amnesic, but definitely not mentally handicapped, after all he finds a cure for the radiation disease with some crude equipment that he designed himself. That's most than even ordinary people would do, let alone handicapped. I think this is a typical data episode, everything that happens to him in it is due to his android nature. The reason he's treated like a monster and feared by the villagers, and why he manages to survive in spite of being impaled on a big pike,etc...

I was looking forward to watching Thine Own Self to see some more of Data, but I just keep thinking that it's not really Data.

'Genesis' is an amazing Data episode.

I'm looking through season 1 and 2 for good Data episodes still.

I always liked Redemption II- when Data is in command, and his first officer doesn't think an android can command a starship. He does a great job putting him in his place.
