Movies you love but (most) everyone else hates

Do most people really hate Watchmen or are they just indifferent? All I know is that no one I know ever even discusses it, except for one person who was a fan of the book.

I walked out on it, and I have sat through utter crap

on topic

the 13th warrior
Deep Rising (monsters on a ship)
The Man who went up a hill and came down a mountain
No Escape (top secret prison island)
Fortress (both the Christopher Lambert sci-fi prison movie and the Raquel Welsch Aussie kidnapped kindergarteners films)
Class of 1999 (you have to admit that the robot effects were pretty good)
The People Under the Stairs (early 90's trapped in a house horror)
The Ref
the live action "Fist of the North Star" movie
Signs
Speed Racer
Demolition Man

Star Trek V
Spiderman 3
Pirates of the Carribean 3
Matrix Reloaded
Matrix Revolutions
The Butterfly Effect
Last Action Hero
Terminator 3

Red Planet- Another serious story about a flight to mars! What were they thinking...its not really a popcorn type movie..some good actors in it too.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (Both films suffer somewhat from the same things that make it so I can't stand the first Mission: Impossible movie [a whole lot of confusion about what's actually going on, plot-wise, at certain crucial points in the narrative], but, overall, they're pretty fun 'female action flicks', and Jolie's portrayal of Lara is pretty much spot-on.
^ These.

Also:
Twister
Resident Evil I-III (though "love" may be too strong a word ;))

Add one vote for Dragonheart...

I liked Dragonheart, too. It had heart and sincerity.

"I go to save the Dragon! Who goes with me?"

A Knight is sworn to Valor...
His heart knows only Virtue...
His blade Defends the helpless...
His strength Upholds the weak...
His word speaks only Truth...
His wrath Undoes the wicked!

:techman:

Great stuff! And a fine performance from both Quaid and Connery...

I notice that a lot of people are listing 13th Warrior...I didn't know it was a "hated" film...I enjoyed the heck out of it and so do most everyone I know.

Interestingly enough, the Arab has a Bowen moment at the climax of the film when he truly understands the Viking prayer...

I wasn't aware that everyone hated either No Escape or Demolition Man.

If we do, in fact, live in a world where people hate these films, but love High School Musical, then I must add these films to my list.

I think 13th Warrior gets on the list because it somehow got bad reviews from the media and didn't do that well at the box office.

Like you, my experience is that everyone I know who has actually seen it seems to like it.

I don't think many people have ever even SEEN no escape, but it and demolition man weren't liked by most of the people I have shown them to

Seems like nobody likes "Escape From L.A." except myself and Roger Ebert. All I ever hear about it is that people thought it sucked and was vastly inferior to "Escape from New York". I feel the opposite. I think Kurt Russell's character is great in both movies, but in the first one, I don't care much for the other characters or anything that happens (it at least looks cool and works visually, but that's all). The special effects in "Escape from L.A." are cheesy in a slick, '90s way, but I find that charming and I think his adventures, the action sequences, and the supporting cast and cameos (Steve Buscemi! Bruce Campbell! Pam Grier! Peter Fonda!) are more fun.

I liked it alright, but agree with the masses that New York is much better. The thing is, Kurt Russell's Snake is a joke, a tongue-in-cheek parody of macho 80's action stars. But he's only funny if his surroundings are played more or less straight. I loved the Bruce Campbell scene in LA, but so much of that movie is so over-the-top that the fundamental joke of Snake gets diluted beyond the point of humor.

And then that last scene... kinda messed up.

I thought Escape from New York had much better supporting characters, like Cabbie & Brain. I kept waiting for Cabbie's twin brother to show up in the sequel. He feels like a character that should have a twin brother. Plus, as far as villains go, it doesn't get much cooler than Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York, A#1!

Really? I thought Demolition Man and Cliffhanger were like Stallone's only popular successes in the 90s.

Demolition Man isn't a good movie, really, but it is elevated by having one of the finest setting gags in the history of film. The Taco Bell joke is equalled in science fiction only by the zen music joke in Children of Men. Of course, as time wears on, it becomes apparent that zen music or something like it is more likely to become fact--and listening to the radio these days, maybe already has--but the Taco Bell joke is funnier.

^An old co-worker of mine loved King Arthur. She was a pretty groovy chick. (Her voice mail message is an audio clip from Gladiator. No other cell phone call ever feels quite as epic.)

Plus the three seashells.:guffaw:
