Movies you love but (most) everyone else hates

A sort of counterpoint to the best sci-fi thread and perhaps a companion piece to the remakes you love thread.

Moonraker. My favorite James Bond movie, probably because it's the least like a James Bond movie. Ron Moore is awesome, Drax is a great villain with a cool plan, there are astronauts and cosmonauts with laser guns, Jaws is priceless, and "Attempting reentry" is the best double entendre in the film series.

The Search for Spock. Okay, not everyone hates this, but virtually everyone's reaction toward it is "meh" (excepting perhaps the NCC-1701 self-destruct scene). I don't get it. To me, it's the most emotionally engaging, well-acted, well-scripted Trek film of them all. Kirk's reaction to his son's death is the best work Shatner has ever done, indeed one of the finest renditions of total shock that anyone has ever done. Of course, the scenes everyone does like are incredible. Film scores have to be amazing for me to notice them; I notice Star Trek III's.

North. Damn it, it's good, goofy fun. It can be characterized as slightly racist, viz. American Indians, but the joke about putting old people on an ice floe to die is a pretty innocuous one. Would people get bent out of shape if a comedy had a joke about Indian widows jumping on a pyre? Well, probably. And somehow that would come off as much darker.

Eyes Wide Shut. I covered this in another thread, but to recap, it's a good, impressionistic movie about the dangers that lie outside the safety of a middle-class lifestyle.

Of course, everyone should feel free to tell me why these movies suck, and I encourage that attitude to reign throughout this thread, because that's the fun of it. :)

Star Trek 2009 because I think everything in it worked for me IMO

Pirates of the Caribbean just got to love Johnny Depp and the action and adventure was great.

^Potentially includible, because while popular, they are widely considered by Those Who Know to be stupid, even by ones who also consider them fun.

To add another that I was just reminded of: Mission to Mars. The dance scene just makes that movie. Maybe it should've been a short; but I rather like the ending, no matter how cliche.

47 people on here guess that's not everyone that does hate Star Trek 2009 that's why I chose it silly I am for picking that.

Star Trek V
Knowing
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Time Machine (2002)
Godzilla (1998)
Cloverfield

The Shadow

The Phantom

But I think "The Rocketeer" and "Buckaroo Banzai" are overrated.

And, oh yeah, I think JURASSIC PARK III is better than the second one, but not as good as the first.

Recently, I like PJ's Kong and Superman Returns a lot more than most people seem to have. And Sky Captain too lol...

Waterworld.

I am the only one of my little circle who was entertained by this movie. Sure, it wasn't great, I would have liked a little backstory of how global warming destroyed the world, and how the atolls were created, but I still enjoyed it.

The Matrix sequel is better than the first one. How's that for an unpopular opinion?

Return of the Jedi has not one but three climaxes, which makes it a grand finish. While the big reveal at the end of Empire Strikes Back has lost its novelty without gaining more credibility.

The end of AI makes the movie.

And for a nongenre dissident opinion, Oliver Stone's Alexander is amazing for an ancient history buff who already knows who all those people are.

LXG! :)

T3. Like a classic rock cover band: recycled but great stuff.

The Core. By far the best of the modern disaster flicks, and no more unrealistic besides.

Mission: Impossible II: Not only the only good one of the bunch, a legitimately awesome flick with positively poetic direction.
