Movies You Can't Stand

Mr. Skin. Not disagreeing about the movie, just pointing out that there are websites with that business model that pull in money. Granted, they were around well before 2007.
Aye, that was my main point. And apparently the Mr. Skin site is actively fed content by major studios. Interesting. But yeah, by 2007, that ship had looooong sailed, and every male American with a computer knew it.

Let me add another of Chris Nolan's "revered" films (around here anyway) to the list of movies at least at least one person hates; Batman Begins. Worst villain character presentation ever and a boring lead playing Batman. No third strike is required. I'm watching this movie, trying to see through the darkness, starting to get into it and...I'm snoring.
Oh, I loathed that dreck from the first viewing. "I'm going to spend years trying to understand the criminal mind?" Hey, asshole, the vast majority of them are men, especially younger ones, who have little formal education and poor to zilch respectable job prospects! There, I just solved your deep-ass existential mystery! Now get yourself a grief counselor, a golden retriever, move to Hawaii, and get along with your stupid life!

I love football, but I can not stand "Any Given Sunday". That movie puts me to sleep. It remains the ONLY movie I feel asleep during in the movies. I haven't, but should buy a copy of it for when I can't sleep.

I'm one of the few ones that thought that "Lost In Translation" deserved the Best Picture win over Lord of the Rings.

I loved the movie actually.

I didn't like Independence Day. The cast was horrible. Will Smith sucked and I couldn't stand Jeff Goldblum and his "laptop that saved the world".

If that stops working I recommend 'Primer'. Three attempts to watch it, three snoozes. And I still don't get what it's about beyond "most boring people on earth build a time machine and start backstabbing each other with it."

For the record, I also fell asleep during Ang Lee's 'Hulk' and the third 'Transformers' film. Didn't want to go, but a friend reeeeeeeally insisted. Either action films aren't what they used to be or I'm just getting old.

I was actually able to watch that straight through in one sitting. I admire the movie's attempts to make the movie as realistic as they could, but man, give me a DeLorean or a phone booth any day of the week. This movie managed to make time travel boring! I didn't think that was possible!

I have to say the last two Superman movies (Returns & Man Of Steel) were wastes of film, videotape and DVD's. Seems like the producers concentrate on the special effects, and then someone right at the end of the meeting speaks up and says "So what are we going to do for the story?" and then some ridiculous plot is written up and called the story. I just tried to finish "Man of Steel and only got through about 3 more minutes and I just shut it off. I could believe that a man could fly in the 1977-1987 films (even in the 1950 "Superman vs. The Mole Men" film I could believe that Superman was flying, but in the last two, sorry Superman flew too close to the sun and lost his wings.

Also, "Encino Man". That script just stunk and Pauley Shore was a terrible actor who was even worst at comedy.

Howard Stern's Private Parts was pretty bad, and I was a big Stern fan back when I first watched it. They really should have cast someone else to play Stern instead of letting him play himself.

I generally like Kevin Costner, but I hate Waterworld and his Robin Hood movie. Ugh.

The Princess Bride - Also annoying and not funny.
Thank you for playing! I'm afraid that, because you lost all your points with that particular answer, we can't give you a prize, but I'm sure all of us here will give you a consoling round of applause! Be sure to try again sometime! :p ;)

Nope - not me!

I had the same experience as the OP. Had it hyped to hell by a friend, watched it with him and HATED it!

From the annoying characters and their little quirks and speech things that are meant to be funny - just ANNOYING AS HELL.

I put this movie down to, "I saw it as a kid and it meant something to me then". To an adult today, it's just crap.

Oh and the other one is that fucking abysmal "Christmas Story". So there's this insipid kid and something about a gun and a lamp shaped liked women's legs. Couldn't get through it, turned it off, mystified at the cult status it has with man-child Americans.

Loathed it.

Again, so you saw this in the halcyon days of 1983 when mummy and daddy were still together and dad hadn't yet gone off with the pool boy and mum's drinking problem was only a nascent annoyance and it meant something to you.

Grow up - the film's really bad and DOES NOT deserve the place it has on the eternal annual Xmas viewing rotation.

Whether they're just plain terrible, (say, Elektra) ...
Elektra had one of my on-going pet peeves. I understand they wanted a mid-level "name actress," but try as hard as they could, the producers simply couldn't find a Greek actress to star in the film? Or someone who at least looked Greek.

It's like in the movie The Lone Ranger, where for the Native American character of Tonto they cast Dustin Hoffman.

:)

Not to defend A Christmas Story's merits (which are many because it is superb), but it "deserves" its place because huge numbers of people like it, whether or not it appeals to an individual. And most people saw it on TV or home video after 1983, it was not promoted much and was kind of a flop in theaters. I saw it with a friend basically by chance and though we loved it, it was years before we encountered anybody else who had seen it. Good or bad, it's earned its reputation.

I guess I missed that one.

Limiting this to, as the OP suggested, films that a lot of other people really liked: Shakespeare in Love, Enchanted, (500) Days of Summer and Idiocracy, all veering towards being boring overall, having annoying characters and an overly condescending tone.

Grease. You want the boy to love you, even though you're not cool? Easy. Just change everything about who you are. Doesn't matter if he's an insensitive idiot. Just change yourself completely for him. Then he'll love you. Great.

Well the film suggested that Sandy at least somewhat wanted to change and that by the end Danny also changed and was going to further change for her as well.

The Transformers movies. Admittedly, I've only seen the first one. I thought it was one of the least likable movies I've ever seen, filled with horrible, hateful characters, truly painful comedic "relief" and ugly, poorly-shot action sequences that went on and on in gross defiance of how incomprehensible they were. Remarkably, the series has apparently gotten worse since then? Somehow? YIKES.

Gravity - People seem to like it a lot. I don't. In fact, it is the only film I didn't watch to the end in a very long time. I found the plot naive and silly. Two people "thrusting" them selves around. Yes, the pictures and the music were very nice. The plot, however, was not.

Gravity is rubbish. Visually stunning, but still rubbish.

I've never heard of, let alone seen A Christmas Story.

When Academy Awards season begins to roll around, I enjoy watching all the nominations BEFORE the ceremony so I can make up my own mind.

Sometimes, overhype settles in before I get a chance to watch a particular movie and that really seals its doom.

Same here. I like to watch a film on its own merits and not based on hype.

OTOH, Griffith made Broken Blossoms, a film with a strong anti-bigotry message. You pays your money and you takes your choice.
I would cite Intolerance more as a counterexample than Broken Blossoms. Broken Blossoms has an anti-bigotry message but tells it by showing a sympathetic portrayal of an Asian stereotype played by a white guy holding his eyes half closed.
Which, as I'm sure you're aware, was standard practice at the time. Were there any leading actors of Chinese descent working in Hollywood then? (Anna May Wong's film career began a couple of years later.)
