Movies; When to go?

Taggart...you are my hero. I can't go to the movies without getting popcorn, which for two people, is MORE than it is to get in to the theatre. I may start equating pain to popcorn and try to condition my mind...Absess might be too much, but damn, maybe I'll have my wife nail me in the balls when i ask for popcorn..that might cause conditioning too...

Generally there are only one or two movies a year I personally want to see in the theater rather than wait for Netflix. Most of my trips to the theater are with friends because they want to see something I wouldn't otherwise think of paying to see. The company usually compensates for whatever substandard flick we end up watching.

I feel, unfortunately, I'm a dying breed.

I like the movies as a special experience. A great film I buy and watch at home, yes. But I love film at the cinema most of all. I like going to a kiosk or counter and buying a ticket. I like standing in line. I like trying to get my favourite seats. I like seeing trailers. I like the excitement of the lights going down. I miss curtains in front of the screen. Whether for art, enlightenment or entertainment, I like the feeling of going and doing something special. There are downsides, yes. Jackals with their talking and their cell phones and their inability to chew with their mouths closed. But I still love the cinema.

If I've never experienced it at the theater, it's just a long episode of something. And truly, it saddens me that people would rather stay at home. The art and wonder and magic and uniqueness of the filmgoing experience is one that many people don't believe in anymore.

I'm part of the same breed. thee's nothing like seeing a movie in the theater. Watching a movie at home is not even in the same ballpark. I don't care how big your TV is or how great your surround sound. It's not comparable at all.

And for the most part my theater experiences have been positive. I almost never have to seal with talkers or babies. Cell phones don't much bother me because I'm watching the screen, not the audience. Plus I like to sit in the front 1/4 of the theater so the bulk of the audience is behind me.

I try to see as many movies as I can in the theater. I figure if it's worth seeing, it's worth seeing the way it was meant to be seen. Weekday matinées are the way to go. Reduced ticket price and while the theaters aren't packed, there are usually enough people to give that communal feel that I so love.

I only go maybe two or three times a year now, so maybe I'm not the best person to answer. 90% of films are only worth waiting to watch on Sky Movies.

I don't read reviews. I go to see what I think sounds interesting and make my own mind up.

Only when there is something that my family and/or I REALLY want to see and can't wait for it to come out on DVD/BD- mostly the big name "franchises" such as the Harry Potter movies, Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Twilight, etc. Otherwise, I just wait to buy/rent/watch them on home video (or Netflix). In most cases, if I didn't care enough about it to see it in the theaters, I'm rarely disappointed that I didn't. The big screen and other enhancements (i.e. 3D) is usually only good for the kind of movies I just mentioned. I could care less if I see a romantic comedy at the theater.

Whenever it happens to work out that I have the funding, and there's something that looks like it's worth seeing. I don't pay to much attention to reviews, because no matter how good rotten tomatoes may be, I've seen plenty of movies and liked them, that I never would have if I went by their "This movie is shit" majority.

Thats not to say I'd go to any ol movie, there's plenty I have seen, that I liked well enough, but just wasn't worth the money for the theater admission.

Generally the movie has been one I've wanted to see for a few months beforehand. At the moment, there are a couple of movies I want to see, but some of these I think can wait until later than the first week.

Also I don't buy popcorn or any sweets there.

KICKASS and HOT TUB TIME MACHINE are the only movies I have seen this year. I "might" go see Ironman 2, but I am not liking the previews so will wait and see what my nephew, who I do agree with about 90% of the time, has to say about it when he sees it...

I am looking forward to JONAH HEX. So I will probably see that no matter the reviews...

I don't concern myself with reviews, I know what my interests are and I go and see what I want to see (or what the gf and her kids want to see). Typical, run of the mill movies, I tend to skip. Any movie that catches my eye and needs to be seen on the big screen, I pay to go see (top notch scifi comes to mind as well as selected thrillers and horror flicks). I also have an addiction to movie popcorn and frozen coke, sometimes I'll see a shitty movie just for them.

^^ so true. A few years back when Shrek 3 came out it got bad reviews and everyone I knew said it sucked..and it did. But on a very hot day we decided to go to the movies and it was the only one starting at a decent time for us...we just wanted the popcorn and diet coke and went...god that movie blew...but the popcorn/soda were tastie!!!

Kickass I'll probably wait until it's released on DVD (as it's been out for a while now). Know nothing about Hot Tub Time Machine (except for a little bit I saw in Empire magazine). Would need to see the trailer for this and Jonah Hex, but both movies would be maybes in my book.

Next for me, is Robin Hood (which starts on Thursday here). That was a maybe before I saw Iron Man 2, but it the trailer looked impressive.

HOT TUB wasn't as good as hyped. And I hadn't seen Hangover until after i saw HOT TUB..Hangover is far better...

KICKASS is the best movie I've seen in over a year....

I have plans to take my girlfriend's rat fink children to see Iron Man 2, probably Monday. I have yet to see an IMAX film and figured we'd go see this. The Robin Hood movie is also on the to see list.

This is how I feel too, I don't let the reviews affect wiether or not I'll see a movie. After I've seen it though, I do check he reviews now and then, just to see if somebody out there has the same opinion I do about it.
