Movies that never were... Or things you wish were movies.

It's been in development several times over the years. HBO had it for a while. Even though I listed it, I have serious doubts about the possibility of anyone being able to do a worthwhile adaptation, or even a spin off set in that universe, these days.

Yeah, I have my doubts too. They're great books, but not everything makes for good visual translation.

Something that could make for an amazing series if done right is Mass Effect. The only problem is that game adaptations have been historically bad, and because the story can change depending on player choices, there's no way to do it without angering a huge number of fans.

Saga of the Pliocene Exile by Julian May

QTF! ^^^ I’m quite surprised this series of books hasn’t yet been tapped: it has quite a bit going on, throwing in time travel to boot.

The follow-up series (set back in the future) would also be a good to film: I was fascinated reading these when I was younger - the mystery of the Hydra, all the family genealogical connections, etc. Harkens to Dune quite a bit, I reckon (minor pun intended) ;)

Could be quite the sweeping epic...

Well, I think the nice thing about Mass Effect is that it's a big enough universe that they could practically do anything with it and have it star a completely new character. The problem with most game-to-movie adaptations is that along the way, something is inevitably changed to make the movie adaptation of the game work better for the big screen. Case in point, how the Animus works in the Assassin's Creed movie being completely different. Most of these changes end up angering fans as not being faithful.

Robert Silverberg's Dying Inside would have been a great movie if done with Richard Dreyfuss when he was in his 40's (mid-1980's). Big name star if a story that shows the SF can be more the spaceship, ray-guns, and aliens. Plus, it wouldn't cost a whole lot to make.

I don't know much about video games and RPGs, but pretty much anything from Infocom would work well (especially Planetfall and Leather Goddesses of Phobos). Also the short-lived Buck Rogers series from SSI.

I've always thought that the best thing for Foundation would be the Masterpiece Theater approach-- sadly, I'm the only person on the planet who thinks that. :rommie:

No, I actually quite like that idea. Although it seems Masterpiece Theatre has taken on less importance as of late.

Would have loved to have seen A Doctor Strange film directed by Guillermo de Toro. Especially if he could have cast Robert Downey Jr. before he ended up being Iron Man. Think about it for a bit, and you'll know I'm right.

I can totally see that he would have been great as Dr Strange.

And yet video game movies are a great idea go figure. There's a Borderlands movie being made ugh!!!

Yeah, seems to be an easy gateway. There's even a Pong movie that was in production at one point. It's like they've pointed to a random executive who they asked, "What's the first video game you've played?"

"Uh.. Pong?"
"Yes! Great idea, we'll go ahead and greenlight a Pong movie. Everyone knows what it is and has a strong association with it. This has Smash hit all over it!"

I hadn't heard that. I know a Tetris trilogy was announced once, and then abandoned shortly after.

And I hadn't heard of the Tetris idea.

I think I'd heard about the Pong production around the time Pixels was coming out, and then Rampage came out. It seemed at one time that studios wanted their own retro game-to-movie.

I've always wanted to see The Chronicals of Prydain done in live action and correctly! Disney bought the rights back in 2015ish.........but nothing since.

Disney has held the rights before. Watching their version of The Black Cauldron, it's clear they intended to do a trilogy. The Black Cauldron combined elements of The Book of Three and The Black Cauldron, the sequel would have combined elements of The Castle of Llyr and Taran Wanderer, and finally a full adaptation of The High King. Would it have worked in the long run? Who knows? Though I agree with you. A full live action adaptation of all five books would be wonderful.

They lost the rights after Black Cauldron though......after the $44 million budget to make and only earning $21 million at US box office.
