Movies Seen In 2022

[Aragorn]

Angels & Demons. Saw The Da Vinci Code, saw Inferno, hadn't seen the middle movie. That's got to be one of the most boring race-against-the-clock movies ever. And the obvious bad guy was clearly not the bad guy which tipped me off on who the villain was due to how few characters would provide shock value during the villain reveal.

Terminator: Dark Fate: A
Really enjoyed a second viewing of this latest Terminator installment. The action is non-stop and well produced, the Mexico setting is progressive for a movie made under Trump, and the use of Arnold spot-on (not too much of a part for him, most of the action scenes were done by the other main actors).

Overall, another great action movie in the Terminator franchise, one that certainly holds its place against the best in the series, and one that is not overlong at just 2 hours exactly in length. Recommended.

One Trick Pony: B-

This is folk-rock musician Paul Simon's movie from 1980, one that comes with a lot of good music and one I own because I'm a fan. This is my first viewing of the film, and I have to say I was disappointed, there really is no story-line, just an endless series of club-house rock concerts, smoke, drugs, and sex scenes featuring the artist. While these can make for a good movie, the overall production is poor and piecemeal, and not done very well at all. No wonder it was a flop back in 1980. For all but hardcore fans, buy the same-titled music album instead, which unlike the film is quite good.

This was a complete rip off of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, a movie I have seen and a play I have helped put on, so it was irritating to watch.

Rebel Wilson's humour sticks out like a sore thumb in this one. She has no scenes to play dramatically, forced to go from awkward joke to awkward joke.

It's a movie out of time. In 2019, when the movie was made, there would have been tweets, threads, YouTube investigators (see Hotel Cecil documentary)etc. about a certain woman in a small French community scamming people and the real authorities would investigate. The one complicit police detective isn't going to work.

The Man From Toronto - D+

Woody Harrelson is the only redeemable thing in this movie. He keeps up decent chemistry with Kevin Hart, who is playing the same old shtick he always does and his character is so poorly written, throwing up when he is supposed to be pretending to be the assassin because of the sight of the littlest amount of blood. What are we 12? The guy is an absolute failure and he really doesn't grow any during the run time.

Kaley Cuoco shows up in a handful of scenes to collect a paycheque in a role that could've played by a lower cost actress and paid for a better writer.

It could have been a fun Liam Neeson-esque cheesy popcorn flick. But it leans too hard into Hart's humour and it just bores me.

And Woody: who still uses Hotmail? Um me.

I've seen this, I remember it being average quality, but a bit better than a D-, I think. Not too bad for a Netfilx film.

When you are suddenly suffering through a provincial internet & cable outage, you find DVD's that you never knew you had. In this case, it was a Tommy Lee Jones four set I feel we pulled out of a bin at Wal-Mart, so we popped on "The Client."

The Client is just as unfocused as other movies. The characters are lacking in depth and any background information is plied from one-liners here and there. You knew where the movie was going to be going and how it was going to end, but like other movies of the time, you have fun getting there.

It was the first time I could remember seeing Tommy Lee Jones playing a slime ball and he played it perfectly. He was dangerous enough to be a threat, but not corny enough to be twirling a moustache.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo A

This was a really striking film, an A grade European drama that relies on its two central characters to produce a suspenseful, erotic thriller that is rarely boring. Daniel Craig is great as Micheal Bloompkist, and the young actor who plays Lizabeth Salander is well suited to the role, and her character is the high point of the film. Well worth watching.

Gangs of New York A-

A Martin Scorsese film that really bring out the subject of class in early American society, and uses the tension between Irish immigrant gangs and their nativist opponents a a theme of the film. It may have been historically better to use an early American labour uprising as the subject, just to get that feeling of historical justice and progress, but seeking a modern audience the plight of early immigrants is seen as just as topical in light of contemporary America. The film is overlong, and lingers too much on one-too-many scenes of 19th century debauchery, while being too slow in developing its plot, which is one of revenge. Recommended.

I watched The Reef: Stalked so you didn't have to. D-. Not even the worst shark movie I've seen this year, though. It's several orders of magnitude better then The Requin.

Really enjoyed the new Elvis film – and, it included showing posters of Kirk, Spock, and Uhura, as well as the Las Vegas marquee of Star Trek: The Experience (1998). Apparently Elvis was a serious fan and named one of his horses Star Trek.

I love a good action flick and this one delivers. The script is quick, witty and well-acted.

Ryan Gosling is great as the lead. Chris Evans as the psychopath villain is a real treat. Rege-Jean Page really sells a complete change of character than what he is known for.

Make some popcorn and turn your brain off for two hours.

This past month I also went to the Fathom Events screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Director's Cut at the Studio Movie Grill in Tyler with my sister. And then I road tripped to Hurst, Bryan/College Station, and Texarkana for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: First Contact (second time this year I've seen it at a theater), and Star Trek (2009). I've seen them all at the theater before, so not adding them to the list.

Cinemark Lufkin also had a Batman Day, three movie marathon. I watched all three of them, first time seeing them on a theater screen, so they are on the list.

I have tickets reserved to see Smile BigD and Selena tomorrow.

Just saw Bullet Train with Brad Pitt and many others.

Damn that was a fun ride ( pun intended) - hilarious and full with awesome action, quite reminiscient of a Tarantino movie just with even more action. Definitely worth seeing.
