Been trapped by work recently but I’ve still managed to get a few cinema visits in.

The Hunt for the Wilderness People – From the wonderful Kiwi writer/director Tiaka Waititi, who gave us the wonderful What We Do In The Shadows a few years ago (vampire mockumentary of the highest order) and will be bringing us Thor 3 comes a live action version of Up, but without the plane flying dogs. Genuinely sweet and heartwarming, never veering near cloying and hysterical to boot. Sam Neil’s probably never been better and if her were American and 100lbs lighter, Julian Dennison (the kid) would be a superstar. Find it and love it. 8/10

Miss Peregrin’s Home for Perculiar Children – Tim Burton’s not put out a truly great film since the mid 90’s and since he has been flip-flopping between Studio tentpoles and cute, but middling smaller projects. With Jane Goldman writing the script (Stardust, KickAss, X-Men First Class, Kingsman) I had hopes for this, but it’s a dull mess. Asa Butterfield is woefully miscast and lumbered with dragging a lifeless character through this not-so-weird world. The entire thing is buoyed by the magical Eva Green and a scenery chewing Sam L Jackson and a few nice performances by the child cast, but the world’s internal logic fails at most points and the final scenes make, well, zero sense and scream of a poorly tested original cut. And as much as I enjoy him as a comedian, Chris O’Dowd should never put on an American accent again. Every time he opens his mouth I wanted to leave the cinema. 3.5/10

Deepwater Horizon – Peter Berg has comfortably moved into playing the same style of story over and over (small man vs BIG HORRIBLE MOMENT) changing just the size/scale of the EVENT and its locale. Still, he crafts these events with such aplomb. Lone Survivor, his last effort, was a pretty trite piece of flag-waving jingoism (and actually factually pretty poor compared to the real event), but the central moment – the fall and run from the Taliban, was pretty damned impressive. Here again, Mark Wahlberg plays a man, who has a wife and a kid, who is good. He must survive. Berg almost tops the visceral, horrific moments of Survivor here building a pretty decent disaster film, centering on the worst oil rig explosion in recent memory. Good actors are cast in thankless roles, building up just enough dialogue to teach everyone how oil-rigging works, pull it all down, but as this sort of thing goes, it was pretty decent. 5.5/10

Bridget Jones’s Baby – Well, the best thing to say about the film is it was wholly inoffensive. But, it was crass, silly, daft and utterly without logic. But being dragged to it didn’t hurt as much as expected. 4/10

Amanda Knox – Netflix documentary following the murder investigation/trial of the 20 year old Seattle exchange student who was found guilty of murdering her English room mate. It’s a fair investigation into the incident, but focusses too little on everything. Focuses too little on Amanda herself and what the Italian authorities allegedly subjected her to; too little on the haphazard investigation performed by the police and the bizarre mindset of the lead prosecutor; and, more importantly, too little on the media attention the incident attracted. For nearly a decade Knox was, basically, slut-shamed by the media due to leaked information from the police/prison service and the media seem to happily stand there, even now, rigidly proud of their right (and the alleged need) to report everything, no matter its veracity. The media head here is a Daily Mail contributor who revels in the number of headline and front page stories he was able to generate out of the incident and how little interest he and his particular side of that industry care about the impact it leaves. Knox, tarred and feathered by the justice system and then the media now is stigmatised by them both, even though the Italian Supreme Court acquitted her stating there was no credible evidence of her involvement. A pretty middling documentary about a sad incident, that had an opportunity to really examine the abuses and processes that she was subjected to. 4/10

Running Total: 45

Hugo – who knows what’s next. It’s Mrs Rune’s choice.

Yes, this plot is horribly cliche, but Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall make it the best cliched movie I have seen recently. Strong performances by both keep you engaged.

The only thing I would've swapped out would have been the needless "Is the daughter mine?" and "Oh my God, I made out with my high school sweetheart's daughter, who might be mine!" storylines and focus more on what happened in the car crash with the Vincent D'Onofrio brother.

The Girl on the Train - 5/10
13th - new documentay by Ava DuVerney on NETFLIX. Powerful look at how slavery shifted into Jim Crow which has shifted into the Modern Industrial Prison Complex. Anyone interested in BLM, wants to understand how/why BLM has emerged, or frankly just wants a well thought out documentary about who the US prison system has been used as a money making scheme off the backs of the poor, and typically black/brown people of the country. - 8/10

The Girl on the Train - having never read the book I didn't come into the film with any baggage or expectations, other hoping for another strong performance by Emily Blunt. And that was solidly delivered. Though the film isn't really that interested in alcoholism, those moments that it does focus on them are well played by Blunt. The film itself is a very slow, rather dry "who dunnit" with no significant twists, interesting plays on the standard tropes or unique ideas. It no doubt wants to be this years Gone Girl but comes nowhere near close. It was diverting (mostly thanks to the strong cast) but very tame in its storytelling and at times slightly muddled by its structure. - 5/10

Running Total: 47

Hugo – missed Hell or Highwater and The Girl With All the Gifts, Kuba & the Two Strings at the local cinema, so probably The Magnificent 7 remake next as Mrs Rune likes a bit of Chris Pratt

So, I decided to watch Ghostbusters today. See what the fuss was about.

In short, the 2nd half was ok, but the first half was terrible. Had zero time for the characters and their 'quirks'. Let me be clear, if these had been guys, I';d still feel the same way. Imagine for a moment Kristen Wiig's character as a male ogling a girl like that - just sad.

Wiig's character: "I'm a science nerd with a dark past and I have quirks!"
Melissa McCarthy's character: "I'm self centered and don't give a shit how I affect other people and I have quirks!"
Kate McKinnon's character: "I'm weird and offbeat but kinda cool and I have quirks!"
Leslie Jones's character: "I'm a sassy black lady whose seen shit and I have quirks!"

Seriously, I'm struggling to remember the characters' names because they involved me so little. Also, just to confirm, the original GB wasn't a favourite film either, thought Bill Murray's character was a bit of a rapey dick.

The whole "Hey, ladies, we have to discredit your discoveries" stuff got on my wick too. That, to me, was really sexist.

So much wrong with this film. I thought, is it just me? So went to another McCarthy/Feig/Katie Dippold (writer) collaboration, 'The Heat', with Sandra Bullock.
The whole sassy women pulling dick moves thing was there too. And again, if guys had been in the roles, it would have sucked so bad.

So I blame the director and the writer, they made a hash of it.

On the plus side Helmswoth has some dance moves (though the initial himbo thing was too unbelievable). Liked the cameos from the originals (blink and you'll miss them).

And here's the odd thing - there was an after credits scene, where Jones's character is listening to tapes. "Hey guys, I just heard something, a word".
"What was it?"
"Zuul."
And I think, for some reason, that might have been a good film, but we'll never get to see it.

Also how did they manage to make the movie Ghostbusters look worse then the original in terms of effects quality and such?

Having not read the book, I don't know how much was derived from the book, however, the script seems to just fly along and not give you more than ten seconds to get to know the characters. The two leads, Matheson and Nixon are strong, but the snippets were too short. There needed to be more focus on the day he got shot or expand its run time to allow it.

X-Men: Apocalypse - OnDemand - Overall better than most of the X-Men movies but still lacking. I really like Oscar Issac but he just didn't click as Apocalypse for me. He's a dynamic actor and he showed nothing of that in the movie.

A few years back, I was in orientation for a job. Part of their training included a welcome to the company/here's what we expect kind of video that starred George Wendt, aka Norm from Cheers. Now, the music used for this video was almost, but not quite, the opening theme from the show. The H/R manager said it was to avoid legal fees & copyright.

I watched the FOX remake of TRHPS a little at a time for the last four days. It was almost, but not quite, the movie I was familiar with...

And there is a lot that I didn't like about it, most especially the bits that showed a theater audience watching the movie, trying to give the remake the same level of cult status the original has gotten over the last forty years.

Went to the bargain Tuesday matinee for the Jack Reacher sequel. I enjoyed the hell out of the first one, so much so that I started to read the books by Lee Child. This one was pretty good, too, but I liked the first one more. Maybe 'cause I hadn't read One Shot before seeing the movie? I read Never Go Back a couple of years ago...

Anyway, this one was fun, too, and it was nice to see Cobie Smulders kick a bit of ass, too. I read she did her own stunts for this movie. Maybe that will translate to Maria Hill getting more action in the Avengers movies...?

Got a plan to go over to Tyler this evening, for Doctor Stranger IMAX 3D...

So, I went over to Tyler tonight, since the Carmike Cinema there is the closest IMAX option, to see Doctor Strange.

I haven't been a big fan of mystic stuff, with a few exceptions. Doctor Strange may just be one of those exceptions going forward. I wanted to see it in IMAX 3D just for that one bit in the trailer with all the buildings at right angles to each other. That scene did not disappoint.

The villain wasn't much, except for that one bit in the New York sanctum, but the Ancient One & Mordo were cool. It was neat to see Benjamin Bratt in a small role, too.

There are two bonus credit scenes, too. One is midway through the credits, the other at the end of the scrolling credit.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - On Demand - I've wanted to watch this for a long time, written and directed by the guy who is directing Thor: Ragnarok. What a great movie, with fantastic performances. Especially from Sam Neill as Hec and Julian Dennison as Ricky who just nails it. It's funny and touching, with a bit of weirdness.

I watched the latest standup special from Dana Carvey the other night. Talks about recent politics, Wayne's World, and the time he sold out to Microsoft and performed his Church Lady for Bill Gates, among other stuff. Too bad very little of it was actually funny.

Ah, well...

Went by Redbox before work last night, and used a promo code to rent Cell starring John Cusack & Sam Jackson, based on the novel by Stephen King. I read the book a few years back, when it first came out. Not too impressed by the movie, though. Watching the making of featurette on the DVD now, just cause I mess bonus features on DVDs.

Watched a couple more standup specials yesterday afternoon. Kathleen Madigan was pretty funny, and Joe Rogan had a couple of good jokes.

Followed that with a Netflix Original starring Paul Rudd. It was actually kinda sweet, about a homecare worker that takes his teenage client on a cross country road trip.

Watchin' DC's Legends of Tomorrow via the CW app now.

- edit -

I've been watching the fifth season of AMC's The Walking Dead via Netflix the last few days, but rented a few moves from a Redbox the other night.

M&DNWD was funnier than I thought it would be.

N2SR was okay, but I liked the first one more.

Watching Warcraft now. The orc effects is pretty good, but the story is kinda dull. Maybe it would be better if I had experience playing the game?

Meh. I think if the Mark Ruffalo/Bruce McGill stuff had been removed and done more background work on Cruise and Foxx, it would have been more of a psychological thriller.

In the past couple months, I have recently watched Star Trek: Beyond, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Ice Age: Collision Course.

Want to watch Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but I don't want to watch the extended version.
