After yesterday's cheap matinee, I went by Hasting's and used store credit & a coupon for a couple of cheap rentals.

Started with The Judge. Good performances all around for that one, with a bit of a twist to the end. Could have done without the poop, though.

Followed that with Birdman, which was kinda awesome in style, and kinda great in performance, especially Edward Norton. Good to see Michael Keaton in a starrin' role again, too.

Watchin' Lucy now, and I gotta wonder, how is drivin' into oncomin' traffic a time saver, really? Another in the series of ScarJo movies that she portrays a woman who is more than human, after Her & Under the Skin.

Divergent is the fourth movie I rented, its up next...or maybe tomorrow.

This film came to my attention back in 2011 as part of Jessica Chastain's miraculous breakthrough year, but it never came to a theatre near me in that span, and I've had the movie on to "to watch" pile for years. I finally got around to it today. It's a pretty good movie, centered almost entirely on Chastain and Michael Shannon; the latter I haven't been overly impressed by in the other things I've seen him in, but this is his best performance (he has a bit of the Jack Nicholson-in-The Shining problem, in that he already looks somewhat unhinged normally). I also liked that their characters' daughter is deaf and this is handled in a very low-key and normal manner, which is not something you see much in media.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - Netflix Instant
Jason Lives: Friday the 13th, Part VI - Netflix Instant

So, I saw that Netflix is gettin' rid of the Jason movies at the end of March. I decided to finally try watchin' 'em, since I've only seen the first & the reboot.

[edit]

Almost forgot, I have watched the seventh one, as well, a few years ago, just before I met the director & cast members at a Fangoria Horror convention in Austin

[/edit]

I watched parts two & three last night, have the fourth goin' now. None of them are particularly scary, and sadly, the third was done in cheesy early 1980s 3D, so there's lots of stuff pointin' directly at the camera, plus a yo yo gag!

Watched Divergent with my sister this afternoon while the nephews were at school. It was alright, but not great. I'm glad I was able to use store credit & a coupon to rent it for free.

Not really in a rush to see the sequel, and my sister said she could wait for it to be on DVD or Netflix.

And then I watched RA while my sister made dinner. That was a pretty damn funny movie, especially the bank robbery.

In totally unreleated news, I'm tryin' to find a double feature to take my nephews to when Avengers: Age of Ultron opens. Been checkin' the Alamo Drafthouse sites first; Houston doesn't have it listed anymore, Austin is almost sold out, and Dallas only has front row, off center seats. Guess I'll have to settle for Cinemark...

- edit -

Just finished the sixth movie in the Friday the 13th series. Netflix doesn't have the fifth, but I don't think I missed much. There's one left to watch, the eighth, which I guess I'll save for tomorrow night after work.

1 Guardians of the Galaxy
Rewatch.
A Marvel movie. I found it as good as the first time. The story of the Guardians of the Galaxy and how they come to save Xandar from Ronin was well written. Each of the characters (except Ronin, Nebula and Thanos) were well realized. 8/10.

2 Big Hero 6
A Disney Animated Canon movie based on a Marvel property. I found that this was well realized, especially when it came to Hiro's grieving for his brother, Tadashi. His character was well written. The moral quandaries that he and his new friends face as they track down a new villain in San Fransoyko are also well written. 8.5/10.

3 Alice in Wonderland (1951)
Rewatch
A Disney Animated Canon movie based on the novels by Lewis Carrol. I found this movie, just as strange as I remembered. Especially with the Cheshire Cat causing Alice to provoke the Queen of Hearts (not that she needed it much) into wanting to execute her. The other characters, including the Hatter and the White Rabbit are just as strange as I remembered. 7.5/10.

4 The Water Diviner
A movie loosely based on a true story about an Australian farmer who tries to find the bodies of his sons who went to fight at Gallipoli. This movie showed the grief and loss of war very well (and also the impact of trench warfare on the unfortunate participants involved). The characters of the farmer and the people he meets during his quest are well realised. As is the situation in the post-war Ottoman Empire. 9/10.

5 Cinderella (1950)
Rewatch
A Disney Animated Canon movie based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault. I found this movie just as interesting as I remembered (although I remembered less than with Alice in Wonderland). This story of the kind orphaned girl who is abused by her stepfamily is still quite powerful in an emotional sense. The interaction between Cinderella and her fairy godmother was well done. As was the character of the stepmother. 8/10.

6 Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
The third in the Night at the Museum series, based on a children’s book. I found that this movie is just as enjoyable and well written as the first in the series. The situations and the various characters involved in this film were well realized. Larry Daley's character growth is impressive, particularly when it came to discussing with his son about the latter's choices about life after school. Additionally knowing that this was Robin Williams' last role made his scenes rather poignant, particularly towards the end. 9/10.

7. Thor: The Dark World
Rewatch
A Marvel movie. The scond in the Thor series, based on the Marvel comic series. This is still enjoyable on the third (or fourth) viewing. The situation with the convergence is well written (although the Dark Elves', and Melekith's in particular, motivations seem a little simplistic). Thor and Jane Foster's reunion is well done, both Hemsworth and Portman's performances were very good. The plot thread involving Loki is very well realized, easily continuing his story from the first Thor and Avengers.
Well worth seeing again. 8/10.

8 Fantasia (1940)
Rewatch
A Disney Animated Canon movie. A series of short stories set to classical music. I found it quite as interesting as I remembered it. All of the sequences set to the classical pieces are well done, especially in the animation. (Some are not quite to my taste, like the Chernoborg sequences, or the Bacchanalia, but Disney and his animators did them well.) As for a part did like, the Sorceror's Apprentice, liked well. Not just because of Mickey Mouse, but because of the lesson involved. To not get over your head in a power you barely involved.
The Sorceror's response is the way would expect a master to react. A great rewatch. 9/10.

9 Muppet Treasure Island
Rewatch
A Muppet movie based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. As is usual for the Muppets, the movie is filled with humour. The role of Jim Hawkins has been expanded to include Rizzo and The Great Gonzo. (Although most of his original plot line is intact). The Jim Henson Company has outdone themselves, they had built upon their experience with the A Muppet Christmas Carol. Tim Curry is great as Long John Silver. Humourous, and yet; threatening. Easily believable as the pirate leader.
All the musical numbers are great, younger children can easily sing along. Not only that, but they add to the comedic atmosphere of the film. 9/10.

10 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Rewatch
A movie based on the Roald Dahl novel of the same name. The story of a reclusive chocolatier who sends out five golden tickets for visitors to his factory. It is also the story of the recipients of those tickets, and how their character flaws influence their journey through the factory. Johnny Depp is his usual idiosyncratic self as Willy Wonka, the chocolatier who takes the flawed children and their guardians through the factory. He was rather good in the role, albeit quite weird. The other characters are well portrayed (as in the events lead to the consequences are quite believable).
Charlie Bucket, the poor (as in socio-economically; not in character, nor in fate) boy who is the final recipient of the golden ticket is better portrayed than the other child characters. 8/10.

11 Toy Story
Rewatch
A Pixar movie. A film about sentient toys. Specifically two toys belonging to a seven year old named Andy. A cowboy action figure named Woody, who is Andy's favourite toy finds himself threatened when Andy receives a spaceman action figure named Buzz Lightyear for his birthday. The movie is mainly about their rivalry. It is also about Sid, Andy's neighbour, who shows sociopathic tendencies in his behaviour towards toys. He not only mutilates them, he also blows them up with actual explosives.
The main plot, of Woody and Buzz' rivalry and their eventual reconciliation, is well written. Pixar set themselves with a high standard with their first outing. Andy's reactions to his toys going missing are also well done. 9/10.

12 A Bug's Life
Rewatch.
A Pixar movie. A film about an ant colony which is subjected to extortion by a gang of grasshoppers every year. It is also about Flik, a young ant who accidently destroys the colony's offering to the grasshoppers with one of his inventions. Another plot thread is about a troop of circus bugs that Flik accidently recruits to help the ant colony fight off the grasshoppers. It is also about the budding romance between Flik and Princess Adda, who is the heir to the colony's Queen. Overall this movie was well written and directed.
The motivations of the main villain, Hopper, the leader of the grasshopper gang, are well realised, easily paralleling real life situations of a similar nature. The comedy of errors in relation to the circus bugs being mistaken for warrior bugs is also well done. 8.5/10.

13 Toy Story 2
Rewatch
A Pixar movie. The second in the Toy Story trilogy. A year after the events of the first movie, Woody is stolen by a toy collector while Andy is at a cowboy camp. Buzz Lightyear then mounts a rescue mission. There are many elements to this movie, relating to the concept of sentient toys, and what will happen to them (a thread that continues into the third movie). One relates to what happens when a toy is damaged. They are liable to be thrown away, or forgotten. The other is what happens when an owner outgrows a toy.
The scenes involving this latter point are particularly poignant, especially When You Loved Me. The reasons why Jessie is the way she is are well realised. The case of the Prospector is also well realized, in the case of never being bought. Almost as good as the first movie. 8.5/10.

14 Monsters Inc
Rewatch
A Pixar movie. The story of two monster friends. Sully (James P. Sullivan) a professional scarer, and his friend Mike Wazowski, his scare coach. As the movie starts they are competing with other Scarer's for the All Time Scare Record. But as time goes on, they are drawn into a conspiracy that runs deep within the company. Again, Pixar has included many elements in this movie. The scare record, the conspiracy and the fact that the Monsters consider humans toxic to them. The plot thread covering Sully and Mike's plight is well realized.
The scenes regarding the details of the conspiracy within the company can be frightening, but this is balanced by Mike being a source of comic relief. This balance is also achieved by a revelation that changes everything for the monsters, while also providing a new opportunity. A great movie. 8.5/10.

Cinderella: A very well done live action film of the classic fairy tale by Disney. Extremely cute, the color palate was beautiful and the actors all did a good job. Even the ones in more plain roles I found the actors did well with.

Insurgent: I've not read the books. I found Divergent to be entertaining despite feeling like a huge retread of Hunger Games on many levels. I was not as entertained by this installment. I found characterizations to be off, especially Christina. Her brother, Caleb, to be so incapable of change from his chosen faction to be annoying. The train car fight is where that really stands out. Then he's with the evil bitch at the end...really? Peter, played by Miles Teller, hate that guy(Peter) and doesn't give me reason to be curious or eager for Teller as Reed Richards. All I see is douche face regardless of his acting maybe in another role. That our heroine whose this seemingly "perfect" Divergent that they've been waiting on is so conflicted she often is her own worse enemy needing to be bailed out by 4/Tobias thus weakening the feminist empowerment message of Tris. I still don't know why humanity is screwed. The ending alludes that we may find out in Allegiant pt.1 or 2 but I don't know if I care enough to spend 4 hours finding out at this point.

John Wick: A very by the numbers "pulled back in, revenge flick" featuring Keanu Reeves. My biggest flaw with the movie is that John is in such a state of shock over his wife that none of his muscle memory can return during his home invasion. It only comes back when John consciously is ready to get his revenge. Other than that I felt it was a well executed by the numbers film with some great fight sequences. I hear it was a modest enough success that a sequel is being pursued.

15 Finding Nemo
Rewatch
A Pixar movie. The story of two clownfish from the Great Barrier Reef. Marlin and his son Nemo. It is also the story of a blue tang fish named Dory, who Marlin looks for while searching for Nemo after Nemo is caught by a dentist from Sydney. The movie has two threads, one is Marlin's search for Nemo. The other is Nemo meeting an eccentric of fish (and other aquatic organisms) in the dentists aquarium, and his attempts to escape. The desperation in which Marlin searches for Nemo is well realized.
As is the depiction of Dory's amnesia. The depiction of the other individuals in the film are also well done. Nemo's growth in his befriending of the other aquarium inmates and attempts to escape are well done. He has an obvious character growth as a result of his experiences. A very good movie. 8/10.

Only about a month left at law school, so my movie-watching gatherings with my friends are being subject to anticipatory nostalgia, seeing as we're all going our separate ways (well, strictly speaking, most of them are going to Toronto and I'm going back to Charlottetown). As the cinephile in residence, I'm responsible for spreading knowledge of older/indie/foreign films -- in this case, Stephanie and I were rewatching this because our fellow watcher, also named Stephanie ("Steph"), hadn't seen it, and Stephanie had told her that she needed to, as she watches a lot of Bollywood musicals. Steph's pronouncement on the ending was "But that's so sad!", followed, the following day, by a text message stating "I can't focus on proofreading today because I keep on think back to Umbrellas".

Anyway, this holds up well on rewatch -- though I still found that the French-language recitative took some getting used to again in the opening scenes, whereas I was wondering if, having seen it once, it would seem natural from the beginning; I guess Demy's world requires a bit of immersion. The production design is a marvel to look at (we had a running conversation about which of the many types of wallpaper we saw in the course of the movie was the best; Genevieve's bedroom was the consensus choice), though sometimes it seems like Demy's desire for a given colour overrides common sense (like Guy's son going out into a snowstorm wearing what is clearly an ordinary raincoat). Steph remarked on the final shot as "the most epic Esso commercial ever made", given how long the movie holds on a long shot of the store with swelling music.

Went by Hasting's after work yesterday, and used store credit & a coupon to rent a couple of movies for $0.82.

Watched Whiplash first, after everyone else in the house had gone to bed. J.K. Simmons is the devil in this movie. No wonder he got the damn Oscar.

Watchin' Into the Woods now...

Still haven't gotten the last Jason Voorhees movie on Netflix. Guess that will have to be tomorrow night.

Watched the last of the Jason Voorhees movie available on Netflix. I do not understand why New York is so heavily referenced in the film's title & promotion, considerin' two/thirds of it takes place on a boat.

After gettin' caught up on The Flash & Arrow this afternoon, I watched the Roger Ebert documentary. Very touchin', and a damn shame...I especially liked the "behind the scenes" stuff with Gene Siskel, since that was the public persona I was most familiar with.

There have been three films made based on Alice Munro short stories; two of those are stories are from the Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage collection, in this case based on the title story (the other is Away From Her, based on "The Bear Came Over the Mountain"). This is a fairly loose adaptation in a number of ways -- it moves the story from 1950s rural Ontario to present-day Ohio, converts it into a purely linear narrative, and expands or revises much of the plot in a bid to reach feature-length (which I really became aware of when, at the 40-minute mark, it seemed like most of the story had been told). In the service of doing the last of those things, it does away with the main twist (the non-revelation of key information). Some of the movie is pretty blatantly padded (I don't know why we needed the grandfather character romancing a gossipy bank clerk). I wasn't really sure about casting Kristen Wiig in the title role (which I always pictured with an Imelda Staunton type, albeit a younger one)

Rented a couple of movies from Hasting's last night.

HB2 was pretty funny, nice to see a comedy sequel that isn't just the same damn story as the first one. I especially liked the car chase.

WvS was a disappointment, though. The motion comic was only four episodes long. Ah, well...

In Time is a serviceable action flick, but it has some muddy science fiction about the life clocks. Why were they needed? How did they come about? Even a throwaway line or two would have helped that for me. Another minor complaint is portraying Amanda Seyfried's Sylvia has a "rebel." She seems like the spoiled brat she calls herself and then all of a sudden comes around to Timberlake's views and falls for him.

Timberlake shows he can be an action star and his scenes with Cillian Murphy are a highlight.

I'd never gotten around to see this movie before now, despite all the praise it gets. It's indeed a fascinating look at what would shortly become one of the major TV trends of the 2000s: reality TV taken to the logical extreme (though reality TV became popular with networks partially because of cheap production costs, whereas The Truman Show is astronomically expensive). My favourite performance in it is probably Laura Linney's work as the pseudo-50s TV wife, complete with terribly forced product placement (indeed, all the product placement bits in the series are pretty funny).

This movie was outragious, and other than some over the top violent scenes (Like the scene in the church), I enjoyed it. Loved Samual L Jackson as the villain, as he was the best part of the movie, lisp and all. This film reminded me of a Star Trek: DS9 episode that was a parody of James Bond. Even the villian's plot was over the top similar to that episode.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent 3D - theater

Rainy mornin' yesterday, so I watched the bleak Chris Evans post-apocalypse scifi film. Humanity's attempts to stop global warmin' cause a planet-wide freeze that kills everyone except those aboard a train that circles the globe. Evens leads a group of lower class citizens from the tail to the engine in an attempt to take over the train eighteen years after the world has frozen over.

Some interestin' ideas at work, and a damn good cast, and that aquarium car was awesome. But overall, it was a disappointment.

Followed that with a trip to the midday matinee of the Divergent sequel. 3D was the only way to see it, and, aside from Tris's dream sequences, it wasn't worth it. Worse than the first movie, it too ends on a cliffhanger.

Got a plan to take my nephew to see Furious 7 tomorrow after school, since his mother took his brother to see it already.
