Movie Tie-Ins?

Mysterion

Maybe I've just looked in the wrong places, but I've not seen any announcement of what Pocket will be publishing in conjunction with the new movie. If I'm not mistaken, the movie premieres in a bout four months. I assume there will be a novelization, but am wondering what else there will be (if anything). Anyone got hard data on this?

Nope, people have asked numerous times, but nobody will say anything about what's happening. We don't even know who's writing the novelisation, which still hasn't even been confirmed.

Hmmm. Now I will say up front here that I know not too much at all about marketing and the like. But shouldn't they be starting to pimp stuff right about now to build up some enthusiasm about both the movie and the product they want tell in conjunction with it?

I would think so, but I assume they know what they are doing over at Pocket.

Technically, books like the Destiny trilogy and Star Trek 101 were meant to coincide with the film's release and the interest Pocket hoped would thus be generated (although not taking the film as subject matter, since the producers seem intent on maintaining the veil of secrecy as long as possible); the change in the film's release date discombobulated those plans.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

^The now-cancelled omnibus of the Crucible trilogy was probably intended to coincide with the new release date in a similar manner. And the fact that the June novel (which will start appearing in stores in mid-May) is a standalone, classic-style TOS story probably isn't a coincidence either.

Even if there's not a novelization or a comics adaptation, Pocket Books should still have some sort of marketing presence to tie in with the film.

For instance, Pocket might be well served by reprinting a few original series novels in trade paperback with photo covers featuring the cast. Imagine a reprint of Spock's World with Quinto, Best Destiny with Pine, Uhura's Song with Saldana, maybe even an omnibus of Vulcan's Soul with Nimoy. This would put attractive Star Trek product in bookstores and could get readers coming back for more.

By the by, I'm not saying there won't be a novelization. My default position is to assume there will be, but the old saying holds -- "Hope for the best, plan for the worst." It never hurts to have a fallback position. :)

It was implied in a thread that I had about the novelization that Pocket Books is waiting closer to the film's release date to make an announcement. I'm expecting something maybe in March or April...patience people patience...lol.

Weren't the last 3 movie novelizations hard back only? I think that explains why I don't have them, just didn't feel like spending that kind of cash for a novelization. I hope they don't do that this time.

I was the one who pointed that out. ;)

The Pocket Books Spring Catalog lists the Underworld: Rise of the Lycans novelization, when the movie itself comes out tomorrow. Novelizations work on a different schedule. :)

Reprinting classic TOS novels with 'new faces' sounds interesting ;)

On a related note.. I wonder if there is any new attempt at releasing non-fiction books. A "Making of" of this new movie, with whole new people and new designers, would be very interesting indeed. Especially if the movie is a success, it will be the making of a new era in Trek.

Ah yes I think I recall that Allyn...thanks for pointing that out! I'm wondering if there are any plans for a Making of or Art books for the movie. I'm particularly interested in seeing the designs for the updated Enterprise.
