Movie Theater Marketing

Went to the movies in Burlington Vt last night and was very pleased to see the trek movie posters displayed in places where it would be impossible to miss them. I got the idea (not like the book stores yet) that the theater was really making an effort to make the trek poster as marketable as possible. I know there are a billion posters on the wall but the trek placements were so good they caught me be surprise.

Right above the lobby area where all of the massive lines wait to get their tickets there was a huge picture of the cast. The poster was the biggest in the theater and the management could not have put it in a more visual position.

I thought that would be fine, but then when I went into the theater to grab our seats there were three "normal" sized ones displayed. Wolverine, Trek and the new Tom Hanks film. I LOVED the fact that the trek film was displayed in the middle. I know theaters are expecting huge weeks from the three weeks those films get released....one after the other, but I just took it as further positive marketing for trek.

no question money is being spent on marketing this film like its going to be a big hit, the question is, does the movie deserve all this marketing?

What gives you the idea that marketing budgets have anything to do with whether the movie "deserves" it? :rommie:

The way in which movies earn their budget is by convincing the honchos that the movie will deliver audiences, and therefore justify the marketing because there will be a return on the investment. Quality of movie has nothing to do with it.

Exactly -- There have been awful movies that have gotten tremendous marketing hype and made a ton of money, and some very good quality films that were ignored by both the studio marketing machine and large numbers of movie-goers.

"Will this film be a financial success" and "Will it will be an artistic success" are two separate questions.

I understand what you guys are saying....but I think we are all hoping this film is enjoyable and true to the concepts and ideas Trek has embraced since it was created. The other point to make is wanting it to be a success at the box office goes along with the idea we will have more trek in the future.

Which of these big "hollywood blockbusters" really deserves all this money spent on various marketing aspects??? The whole industry is corrupt and outrageous with what's spent on this bullshit. But that's the way it is. I think most of the blockbusters suck in reality anyway....I mean when you are talking about a really good thought provoking movie...Batman (et al) doesn't spring to mind. Something like inherit the wind or 12 angry men does.

this is true they really go over the top these days.

if non trekkies dont go to see this movie in the first week or so, no amount of marketing is going to make up for the bitching Trekkies will be doing about it, after they have seen it for the 10th time in the first week.

over the top marketing is all well and good, but a negative reaction from non trekkies who see this movie, will doom the movie.

some of our theatres play trailers on monitors in the lobby and star trek seems to be playing more then a lot of other upcoming movies.

^ that doesnt meant anything, in our local shopping centre, we now have more than our fair share of empty stores, and in one of them are two big TV screens, which constantly played "The Pink Panther 2" on them.
