Most Underused Secondary?

Janice Rand eventually ended up stationed at Starfleet H.Q. I imagine they kept her away from transporter consoles up on Spacedock as well as down on Earth.

There was a blonde chica -- some kind of scientist -- who gave Kirk a report once. She had an interesting voice; kind of low and no-nonsense. She wore her hair up. She would have been a good addition.

Edit: now that I think about it, I see her wearing the communications earpiece, so she might have been one of Uhura's relief officers.

Well, the communications piece and low voice thankfully narrow the field down from a lot of yeomen. Did you see this lady in "Doomsday Machine" and that "Way to Eden" episode?

Because if you did, the character in particular was Lieutenant Palmer, played by Elizabeth Rogers... I think the actress name is right. This is just off the top of my head. Anyway, Palmer apparently IS the Relief Communications officer... at least from the second season up.

Okeydoke.

Of all the "reocurring secondaries" in TOS, which one do YOU think, more than all the others, should've been used more?

BTW, Any of the "Big Seven" (Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, Uhura) do NOT count--they're primaries.

I'm thinkin' along the lines of: Rand, Chapel, Mr. Leslie, Dr. Boma, Kyle, Reilly, etc.

I'd have to go with the St. Louis Rams actually! It's like they're not even there. ;)

:) Thank you for the episode names; I was assuming three shifts, hence two other relief officers.

Here she is: Lieutenant Palmer

I never cared for that Lieutenant Palmer.........

She reminded me of my junior-high Algebra teacher....... uugghhhhhhh......... What a witch.............

Palmer was cute. In a "high school guidance counselor who isn't over 40 or 50" way.

yep, same actor (Barbara Baldavin) and same character (Specialist 2/C Angela Martin).
Slightly OT... in Shore Leave, she doesn't get killed does she? I had the feeling she just ran so fast that she went smack into the tree and knocked herself out. But in the end, when everyone is standing at attention, she's not there. McCoy appeared to be the only one who was killed and he was revived... if Angela was killed, then for certain she would have been "repaired" as well, right? Anyway, if she was indeed killed then no hope for another appearance...

Otherwise, as for guest stars who made strong impressions, definitely Riley, Noel, and possibly Kyle or Rand. I thought for certain that Riley would have made a few more appearances. In the two he made, his roles were significant to the plots. Easily he could have continued on. Very decent actor. Helen Noel was ravishingly beautiful. I found her to be the most attractive female officer, the combination of her beauty plus her personality. She could have easily had a few more guest spots. Kyle made a few appearances, but always very minor. Not much depth to his character. It's hard to say how good an actor he was, if he'd be able to meet the challenge of a more formidable role. Rand was OK... I just never warmed up to her. Miri was her only major claim to attention, followed by Charlie-X. But all of her interactions were a bit pedestrian... nothing really attention grabbing.

Oh yeah, and then there's Mr. Leslie. Eh... cardboard character. Less of a personality impression than Kyle. Wasn't his only major interaction with Kirk in The Paradise Syndrome, where he disobeys the order not to beam down? Purely a crew filler character and should probably stay that way. He served his purpose well, I think.

Commentating by the numbers;

1. Yes, Angela does get killed during "Shore Leave". The problem is, it's 60's television and you couldn't show her being riddled with bullet holes and leaking blood by the litres in order to sell the fact. As for the ending part, you have to look real close and on one of the edges of your screen to see that she in fact does return with the rest of the group- and an earlier draft actually includes commentary on her own revival.

2. Definitely liked Riley- could've seen him become the Navigator as opposed to Chekov. Kyle was definitely good at being hapless, especially when he would seem to be assaulted or taken by surprise in the Transporter room almost on a weekly basis (I kid). I'll refrain from commentating on Rand and Noel for the time being.

3. Considering Mr. Leslie was played by Shatner's primary stand-in, who was never more than an extra, it's amazing that he got any close-up time at all. I suspect we all like him because he's a redshirt and still lived despite getting his ass kicked repeatedly, and his appearances make for a real kegger of a drinking game. Look, he took a dive from his chair! *CHUGCHUGCHUG*
