Most underrated and most Overrated character?

Under: Garak, the most complex, nuanced character in all of Trek

Over: Data -- overdone. We get it, he's letting us think about humanity through his outsider-ness. Terrible attempts at humor (his and the writers'). Countless reaction shots of people smiling or laughing at Data -- ugh!
Garak is one of the most popular characters in Trek (won the last Favorite Character game here) and highly rated by almost everyone, so I would hardly call him underrated.

I had no idea he was so highly thought of. How'd I miss that?

Most overrated: Robau.

Over-Rated - Robau. He was a punk who got bitch-slapped. What's so awesome here?

Careful, Robau may send a message through space and time to Chuck Norris to kick your ass.... I'm just sayin'

Overrated: Kirk - He was basically a cartoon action hero. I would have loved to see a more cerebral side of him.

Underrated: Nog. This kid went from juvenile delinquent to competent Starfleet officer. He stood up to his Uncle and Ferengi tradition to follow his dream. He had one of the best character arcs in the franchise (especially for a minor role player).

I get another over-rated pick since my Garak pick earlier is, I guess, quite popular.

Over-rated: Nero. People were raving about Bana's performance, and he's got like a few lines, and is just the same old angry widower we've seen before. Ho hum. He doesn't even quote Moby Dick, though he does address a captain informally, so he must be cool by today's standards. He should wear a dark long-sleeved shirt untucked, then he'd be perfect.

Yeah, I got indeed a little fed up with the little Andronerd. Especially when in the movies it started to be all about him and Picard basically.

The problem with Data is that he was a great, interesting, break-out character in the first couple of seasons. A major reason for keeping on watching.
But after that... ISTR Brent Spiner, sometime in season one, saying that if TNG did run seven years, then he thought that by the end of it Data would be almost human (in terms of having found emotions through experience).
Instead, he got paused and we got increasingly tiresome 'Data doesn't get humanity' episodes each year...

Intersting related question: Spock was great in the original series, but was being over-exploited and misused in season three. If TOS had run for seven years (and Nimoy hadn't quit, which he might well have done), would Spock have been messed up by mis/over-use before the end?

had his 70th birthday this week, your ass is probably quite safe. i live not far from the place where carradine passed away in questionable circumstances, curious if norris will follow his example.
since here are many who convinced themselves that garak is a great character, i never managed that. i think his endless palavers are rather annoying. assassins should not be that talkative. a lot better than troi though, who wrecked any episode and movie in which she had more than a cameo appearance.
the most underrated characters are probably kim and neelix.

Overrated: Data. He was my first thought when I saw this thread heading.

Underrated: Kes. A character with far more potential than I think her creators realised.

Most Overrated: Travis Mayweather. I will never understand the irrational popularity of this character.

Most Underrated: Kirk. Seriously, where's the love, people?

Overrated: Worf. Never saw the appeal of the character. Klingon honor, blah, blah, blah... I'd also agree with others who said that Data's overrated.

Underrated: Nog. For a secondary character, he had a lot of depth. By showing an atypical Ferengi who still managed to stay true to his Ferengi roots, I thought he added a new dimension to the Ferengi.

Underrated: Chief O'Brien (from TNG at least). I think he had a lot more potential and had a wisdom, and experience, that some of the younger officers lacked.

Overrated: the EMH from Voyager. Robert Picardo played the role beautifully but he just got so tiresome and boring.

Most Overrated: Travis Mayweather. I will never understand the irrational popularity of this character.

Really? In my time on this board, I can probably count the number of people who have said anything positive about that character on one hand.

Overrated: Khan. He was an interesting character but so many people rate him as Trek's greatest villain. I just don't see it.

Underrated: Jadzia Dax.

Serious? All I ever hear is, "Travis-this" "Travis-that" "Travis is the best character in Trekdom" "His acting is sublime" "Brando would envy his chops" "Scene-stealer" "Oscar-worthy performance" "Fully realized character" "Character depth rivaling the Mariana Trench" "Spin-off worthy" etc.

^ And don't forget all those boards with the Travis Mayweather fan fiction.

Anthony Montgomery could walk into any bar, in any city and never have to pay for a drink.

I guess I somehow have just managed to miss all that. I certainly don't read everywhere in these forums. Oh well, that's interesting.

I guess I haven't been around for many fave/least fave character threads in the ENT forum, but the one I was around for, several people listed Travis at their least fave character, and no one mentioned him as their favorite. http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=118080&highlight=favorite Small sampling I know, but that's the type of sentiments I've been seeing.

As far as fan fiction, I know absolutely nothing about that.

Oh, I see what you're doing there Joeman, we're being ironic about how Mayweather is "overrated" and Kirk is "underrated" and you're playing the straightman on the joke!
Well played sir! :rommie:
