Most successful trek film

I wasn't sure which movie section this should go under so I put it here. Which trek film sold the most tickets?

I thought TMP made by far the most money of the original cast films, when adjusted for inflation. Supposedly this was due to pent up demand for new Trek material. There is a web site out somewhere with the figures.

No idea how TMP compares to ST 2009 based on ticket sales. It would be interesting to see. TMP did well overseas, ST 2009 not so well, so it also depends if you are interested in global sales or US sales.

"A question has come up regarding if the new Star Trek will be the highest grossing Star Trek film of all time, after adjusting for inflation. Right now the top film is The Motion Picture, which has a gross of $239M in today’s dollars."

This appears to be US sales only. Annoying.

From what i can tell. ST:TMP still has the record for the most successful trek film at the box office.
It grossed worldwide approx $139 million, divide that by average ticket price in 1979. ST:TMP sold approx 55.4 million tickets compare to Star Trek(2009) 51.4 million tickets.
If we adjust by inflation. ST:TMP grossed approx $415.3 million worldwide in 2009 compare to Star Trek who grossed $385.5 million

Also worth noting is that films nowadays spend considerably less time playing in cinemas. TMP was showing for several months, STXI for several of weeks.

STXI run lasted 21 weeks and it during it widest released it was shown over 4000 cinemas compare to ST:TMP 1002 cinemas in 1979.

Star Trek 09 swept the board on the opening weekend, US Gross and worldwide gross.

Star Trek eleven's total intake is bosted by DVD sales, which TMP didn't have the ability to take advantage of, ST 11 may one day exceed ST 1, but not just yet.

Well, commercial Beta and VHS were around when TMP went to video. At $80 each.

TMP was still running in suburban cinemas, here in Sydney, in August 1980. In those days, cities often only had one or two prints of a "new release" film. It would premiere in the CBD, run a few months and eventually move off to suburban cinemas, civic halls and country area theatres.

According to George Lucas's Blockbusting, Alex Ben Block ed., ST:TMP had a domestic box office of $208.5 million, adjusted to 2005 dollars. The National Association of Theater Owners gives the average US movie ticket price in 2005 as $6.41 compared to $7.50 in 2009, a ratio of .855:1. If we take STXI's domestic box office of $257.7 million and multiply by .855, we get $220.3 million. That's kind of a back-of-an-envelope estimate but it should be in the ballpark and it does appear that STXI has surpassed TMP as the most successful Trek movie.
