I confess, I go back and forth on whether FC outranks 2009 or the other way around, and when you get down to the bottom depths things get fuzzier since, for obvious reasons, I almost never watch those ones. :)

I agree that Kirk's arc in the Kelvin movies is the core to what it's all about. It may be off-putting to fans who wanted their well-known and classic Kirk...but this is one of the few characters (maybe the only character) who grew up totally differently in the new timeline, and therefore had a much different journey through life. You have to expect that his personality and values are going to be very different than what we knew in the Prime timeline....

To me, this is one of the most interesting aspects of the Kelvin films.
However, Khan existed long before Kirk's father was born, and therefore should be the same in the Kelvin films.

Definitely some interesting discussion so far.

One of my take-aways is that people have "dislike" for some percentage of the Trek movies a lot more than I do. While the exercise forces you to rank/weigh your favorite to least-favorite, and thus forces me to have some "bottom picks..." the only Trek movie I really don't appreciate is INS, and even that I find has some redeeming qualities and I do re-watch it from time-to-time.

I outright dislike my bottom three (Insurrection, Into Darkness and Nemesis), and may have included Generations in that if the Shatnerverse novels didn't retroactively undo Kirk's death for me. I at least like all the others, and love the top 5 or so.

To me it was less that I wanted classic Kirk and more that this was reinforcing to general audience that this cliched version was an accurate portrayal of classic Kirk, spreading the pop culture notion that the internet meme version is accurate.

Though I'm a big fan of Into Darkness, there is one way in which it's the worst Trek film by a mile -- that idiotic title! It's so embarrassing!

"John Harrison was a fiction created by your Admiral Marcus. "

Yes, there is.
That only suggests he is not "John Harrison." He is Khan.

Are you saying it suggests Marcus further genetically manipulated Khan more to be the "John Harrison" persona? I think it is a weak explanation, and production should have put in a method actor who better looked and acted the part of the Khan we know. "John Harrison" was a wholly unfamiliar and unsatisfying incarnation of Khan.

They tried. Cumberbatch was second choice.

And I am suggesting Marcus did cosmetic surgery to a person to conceal his work. You know, like Star Trek does.

I feel like BC doesn't get enough credit for playing the role in Into Darkness. Was the decision to make the villain "Khan" a questionable one? Yeah sure. Was the casting of that character questionable given the ethnicity and background of said character? Yeah absolutely.

Is any of that Benedict Cumberbatch's fault? No, of course not...and in a vacuum, I think he actually did a really nice job.

Cumberbatch is excellent in my opinion. Even as Khan there is a coldness in him that is reflective of the intensity of the emotions he is trying to keep under control until he thinks he has lost everything.

It's genuinely good character work.

When he is on screen in Into Darkness, it's downright impossible not to be 100% focused on him.

That, to me, is pretty damn good work by an actor, especially in a movie like this where there are a TON of things going on that could otherwise distract you.
