Most overrated/underrated Trek episodes

You can dismiss it as bandwagon-jumping if you want, but they were both truly flawed, quite awful films.

I'm in partial agreement with you. They were flawed yes, but "truly awful"? Nah.

Nemesis in particular won my respect (in spite of Data's death, the worst part of the movie for me), because if it hadn't been made, the TNG movies would have ended with Insurrection. Now THAT was "quite awful".

I've found that many people dislike the Worf-centric episodes of TNG (even more so when they involve K'Ehler, however her name is spelled) but I thought they were awesome. They developed character depth that simply wasn't present in early TNG or after DS9.

Also, I think Balance of Terror is a little bit overrated. It's a good episode; it's just blown out of proportion because it was one out of three episodes in the entire 3-season run that had Romulans. It's pretty much Hunt for Red October with spaceships.

er, K'ehleyr was a very popular character, as was Worf, which was why he went to DS9 AND was still in the TNG movies.

"Sins of the Father, "reunion," "redemption," etc. are all well-regarded as far as I know.

maybe some on this board aren't fans of the Worf-centric episodes, but I don't think that's necessarily a representative view.

overrated TOS: "space seed"
underrated TOS: "all our yesterdays"
overrated TNG: "the inner light"
underrated TNG: "booby trap"
overrated DS9: "in the pale moonlight"
underrated DS9: "necessary evil"
overrated ENT: "twilight"
underrated ENT: "observer effect"

i don't know (or care) enough about VOY to make a distinction. they all pretty much suck ass, anyway.

Underrated: It's Only a Paper Moon - This episode did something that Trek never really did; it took a character who went through a traumatic event, and shows how it actually affected him, and his struggle to put his life back together. It's impressive that the show focused on two supporting characters, probably moreso that the studio actually let them focus on two supporting characters, and Aron Eisenberg pulled it off wonderfully.

Overrated: I'll go with the others that said Far Beyond the Stars. I liked the concept behind it, but the execution was... strange. I was a good episode, but not as great as other people make it out to be.

I agree 100%. I love "It's Only a Paper Moon". It's probably the only Trek episode to deal with post traumatic stress. Which is something that should be very common considering the life and times of being a Starfleet officer.

Didn't "Family" (TNG) deal with it as well? I may think DS9 is the best, but I think TNG should get credit where credit is due for that episode.

I forgot about "Family" you're right. Both Stewart and whoever played his brother did a great job, especially in that scene in the vineyard.
My only knock on Family is the B story with Worf and his parents, which wasn't a bad story in and of itself, but it detracted from Picard's story. It would have have been great if they spent the entire episode on Picard.

Paper Moon didn't have a B story (from what I recall) and was really able to delve into Nog's issue, which I think made it all the better.

The most overrated episode: City On The Edge of Forever. I just don't buy the whole Shatner-Joan Collins romance.
