I picked Kathryn Janeway. Not because I hate her - I actually think she's the best Star Trek captain - but because her role sometimes got pushed up more than it had to do. That wasn't necessary as it would have been as good or even better without that.

Paris.

This is a character who just got worse as the show went on. His scarcastic quips everytime someone/thing appeared on the viewscreen e.g."Friendly fellow"....laughable and predictable.

Nothing wrong with the actor. His character was just not developed and became really one dimensional. A waste.

I am going to say the Doctor. I liked him and I suspect the reason he is so popular is because Picado handles the material so well which to me is more admiration for the actor which is fine. Going through this rewatch I am surprised at how little he actually changes.

Janeway.

Hugely flawed but often defended by apologists. Inconsistent and very frustrating to watch as a result.

The Doctor

I liked him and Picardo was great in the role, but at the end of the series, he kind of usurped the show, which was a little unfortunate for everyone else.

Seven Of Nine.
Simply too much of her saving the ship and fixing everything with her Borg technology and knowledge.

Maybe it's our own inadequacies that perceive it as overkill. Truthfully, it'd be handy but emotionally, no one cares much for a know it all. I miss the days of dilemmas in sickbay. Now it seems We have a nanoprobe for that™

Hmmm. Overrated? Dislike would be an easier question! The only characters that were truly rated at the time were Janeway, The Doctor and Seven. Given I don't believe either The Doctor or Seven were overrated, it has to be Janeway that gets the dubious title. She made some horrendously bad decisions on behalf of her crew.

I think Seven of Nine is the most overrated. Jeri Ryan did a great job with the character but if I had to hear "Borg nanoprobes" one more time.

Paris is a possibility, perhaps earlier on.

Definitely Kes for me.

I never really cared that much about her despite her being pleasant and having a lovely voice. She is quite bland to me and I am unsure where the character was really going to go. She could easily have faded into the background and been a recurring character and it would not have made a bit of difference to the show. [I also can't help but suspect that some love her simply because they are attracted to that type of woman. See: Ezri]

I think with Seven [and Jeri Ryan] they upgraded to a far more interesting character [and a far better actress than Lien]. I'm quite unsure why so many bemoan Kes leaving [and I liked her!].

I bet they could end erectile dysfunction with a nano probe. Gosh I was so sick of that. Yes powerful machines. we get it. But Borg have their limits. That's why they continually assimilate.

And speaking of over rated and underrated at the same time. Can we bring up dead crewman. With seven's apparent skill of bringing back the dead, why did Janeway lose crew? (Mortal coil anyone)

But if Neelix was dead who would take care of Naomi.

Oh I dunno... her mother?

Neelix took responsibility for so much of Naomi's childcare (despite having as many if not more duties) because Samantha never believed that Noami was truly her child.

She would sit in a chair at night staring at the fake Naomi, rocking back and forth. Back and forth. Back... and forth.

Sorry, but I just can't do it. If absolutely pressed, I'd say Chakotay, but, well you know. Overutilized, Seven, though strangely perhaps, not absolutely because she consumed too much screen time IMO. Her portrayal was a fine one by a talented actress, but there were simply far too many instances in which the character didn't evolve and the repetitive rants and petulance were more than a bit noisome.

Agreed that Paris pretty much got worse through the show but he was still OK. I think the most overrated was Tuvok, even though he started out great and I usually like him, he declined the most and yet a lot of fans seem to think he was one of the greatest characters in all Trek, a much better character than Chakotay.
