I'd have loved to have seen more from the other characters, and less of Kirk proportionally - but without losing ANY of the Kirk material we got. Say, spread the whole thing over a five year run, for instance...I voted for James Kirk. I get that William Shatner was hired to be the star in the beginning and Spock and McCoy were supposed to be the way to show how Kirk arrives at his decisions without kirk talking to himself or doing voiceovers. I believe the Kirk-Spock-McCoy friendship is a main part of the show's appeal. But...there were a lot of things that Nimoy and Kelley stated that they would liked to have done with the Spock-McCoy friendship if it were not for Shatner's demands for screen time. The supporting "four" also had little to do because of lines being cut. Kirk's a great character but looking back in hindsight I would have liked to see a more "ensemble" cast when it came to the storytelling. Spotlighting other characters once in a while might have brought a new shot in the arm to some of the cliché-ridden plots of "Kirk in danger," "Kirk falls in love," and "Kirk is dead."
It was the 1960's other TV Uhuras played mainly maids, a futuristic one manning the telephones in space was an improvement. It is said Nichols would have left, she knew her role was limited. MLK encouraged her to stay.Lieutenant Uhura.
Despite Nichelle Nichols' inflated self-image in later years, Uhura really wasn't much more than a receptionist.
None of them. TOS gets enough hate as it is, sometimes without people realizing it (calling it "campy" or "cheesy"). I'd say Kirk is probably the most underrated and least understood, at least in popular American culture.
Chekov. He couldn't act. Though I'm not sure many people rate the character highly since I've rarely seen or heard many people talk about him.
