Most gorgeous episode

Oddly enough we didn't get a colour set until 1976 and then spent the best part of the next two years with it fading to black and white and calling the engineer out!

I wouldn't call that odd. My family didn't have a color set until around 1990. My exposure to color TV was mostly my grandmother's TV, and its colors were way off because grandchildren were always messing with the dials.

My family got its first color TV in 1966 (just in time for Star Trek's debut on NBC), and man, that thing was a bitch to keep properly tuned. We were always fiddling with the color controls to keep the colors from going off.

Off as in fading out or off as in true?

"Off" in the sense of the opposite of true. On those old color TVs, we had to constantly adjust the controls to keep faces from going green or purple.

By the mid-70s, if not a little sooner, TV sets were boasting electronic features that automatically set the color adjustments for you. That must have been in response to the troubles you had.
