Mortal Coil

Thank you for the reply. So am I reading this correctly as long as one has intact neural pathways she could do this to anyone? Then let's hop to it Doc!

I was watching "Emanations" the other day, and noticed how "Mortal Coil" explores many of the same themes of life after death. But I think MC does it much better, because its issues are focused on the inner struggle of a major character, instead of random aliens of the week. And Ethan Phillips soars with it.

I miss Lt. Durst :(
I thought it was clever though, to establish Durst in an episode before his demise. They had cast Brian Markinson as the bad guy in "Faces" first, then apparently rewrote a couple of random crewmembers to create Durst and his fate.

Yeah, I really enjoyed that. For some reason, they managed to trick me into thinking I had seen him in the background a lot more than just that one episode.

I liked durst too. That was a tough episode. But it worked.

Hogan's death in Basics seemed so pointless. I was sad for the waste. Like they were tired of paying the actor. If I were hogan I'd have NOT picked up the bones. Janeway wants them so bad she can pull a Sigorney Weaver thing. I doubt she would lose a crewman for bones clearly outlining a predatory cave. I might be mistaken though.

I guess I'm glad it was Hogan and not some redshirt (cause that's such a cliche)- made the planet seem more threatening.

Unfortunately even if Seven had been around I don't think nanotechnology would have saved Hogan.

If Seven had been a covert Borg agent, she could have assisted the EMH every time there was a terminal case, quietly building a nest of sleeper drones for a takeover attempt.

I know it had to be done. It achieved the effect I just didn't want hogan dying so soon. The "red shirt" who died in the cave was even more predicable to me so regardless of how I feel Hogan had to go so it set the tone of the planet. But why said "waste" wasn't that I didn't react. I did. I felt grief, it's just that it was a so-so plot that needed something more. Whine, whine end rant :-)

I agree; I don't think nanoprobes could put Mr Hogan back together again.

One great thing that came from Hogan's death was "Distant Origin". Heck I would have brought Hogan back every week just to kill him off again ala Kenny on South Park if it meant we would have gotten more episodes the quality of "Distant Origin".

I am SO glad you brought that up. I don't watch season three much so it shouldn't surprise me that I forgot but that's seeing the bright side. I guess. :-). Thanks.

I tried to make a list of possible outcomes if Seven used her nano-probes
1.)She could have helped with the single death in 'Killing Game'. Then again perhaps she did. Who knows?
2.) in 'Equinox' their were 2 dead when Voyagers shields were penetrated. These are usually gross burns from the console. The again Seven was neutalized in Ransoms ship.
3.) In the 'Latent Image' in he Fifth Season Jatel was mortally wounded by an alien weapon. Possibly the upper backbone region was too complicated to re-initialize the nano-probes.
4.)In 'Juggernaut' their was acouple of alien deaths from theta radiation but Sevens nano-probes weren't activated. The malons were probably too far gone to save and they were monsters- anyway.
5.) She could have healed Abaddon in 'Alice' in the sixth season.
6.) In the ep. 'Riddles' Tuvok was permenantly demented by the Ba 'Neth who are the 'Shadow People'. Janeway eventually found a way out and put Tuvok in the clear.
7.) In 'Ashes to Ashes' she could have treated Lindsay Ballard and helped her get away from the Kabali. It seems to me Lindsay's treatment was flawed.
8.) In 'Repentence' Seven cures Ika and saves his life. Who else could be more of an obvious example. She cures tissue by carrying the nanoprobes to his head where they do their work.
