Trekmovie has some more info from an actor in the new film. What I wonder is will this movie mention yound Kirk going to Tarsus IV from Dagger of the Mind, that would be a nice piece of continuity that's not fanwankish.

Didn't Tarsus IV figure in "Conscience of the King" and not in "Dagger of the Mind"?

I think earlier discussions here covered the age of the actor playing young Kirk in the movie and figured that he might be a little too young to reasonably be playing him during the events on Tarsus IV. Have to dig it up to be sure, though -- it was quite a while back.

Edit: Article announcing the casting of the Young Kirk role can be found here:

The consensus seems to have been along the lines of "Maybe. It would be cool if they did."

Right, Concience of the King, a little brain freeze there. Yeah, it would be nice to see why young kirk was living somewhere other than Earth between the time he was born, and went to Starfleet Academy.

Hmmmmmm. Didn't Dominic Keating call the same part "Kirk's evil stepfather?" Perhaps there's a little Hamletting going on in the Kirk family.

Good call, also a classic Trek staple, taking the shakespeare themes and weaving them into the story. If these new writers are smart enough to do that, I have more respect for them.

George Kirk gets killed in the line of duty, Winona Kirk marries evil Uncle Frank Kirk, Jim and George Samuel hold a stage play to screw with Uncle Frank's mind.

Does that mean we'll get to see the ghost of George Kirk?

"Red Shirt Number 1 and Red Shirt Number 2 are dead."

^^I couldn't agree more. But I find the abusive uncle cliche is more overused.
Well, it may be a cliche' but it's also one of those things that explains why a kid would become... obsessive about success?

Half a dozen other things could explain that. We don't need to find out Kirk had an uncle who was a white trash bum who wore the same wife-beater and jogging pants with a yellow stain in the crotch every day and was always seen with a bottle of saurian brandy to explain why he became obsessive about succeeding. It could just have easily been because of guilt he felt about what happened on Tarsus IV or whatever.

Who says that he is some redneck wife beater?

Just because he is an abusive alcoholic doesn't make him a redneck. He could be a successful business person who is a horrible person at home. That dynamic could be interesting if done right.

The Cliche is that the Abusive Uncle is a Redneck. There's usually no deviation, and Abrams don't strike me as someone who deviates from tradition.

Oh, no cliche there. Driven to succeed by self-inflicted childhood guilt.

The Cliche is that the Abusive Uncle is a Redneck.

Oh, if that's the cliche then we don't have a problem, since no one who knows has suggested that the uncle is a redneck - that's your contribution to the scenario.

Since this event has already been established in The Canon, they might as well work with it. No need to throw in another cliche into the mix.

Another cliche?

No significant guilt over Tarsus has been established for Kirk, just the event. So whether they go with guilt over that or some reaction to an Uncle, they've thrown exactly - count 'em! - one so-called cliche to the mix.
