More ideas for casting Marvel's remaining Avengers

About a month or so ago word leaked from somewhere that Marvel wanted to cast Brad Pitt as either Captain America or as Thor, depending on which role he chose. I really don't think he would be right for either role at this time. He looks and is too old to play Captain America, a hero from WWII stuck physically in his 20's due to the super soldier serum and being stuck in suspended animation in a block of ice. And I don't think he can pull off the grandeur of portraying the norse god of thunder either. And no mention has been made about who would play the Ant-Man/Hank Pym. So, who should play these roles?

I don't have a choice for the others yet, but I do have one for Captain America. A relative newcomer that I think really looks the part.

Scott Porter

He is the actor who played the young Rex Racer in this summer's Speed Racer movie, as well as being in the Friday Night Lights series. I thought that he played a good hero to young Speed in the movie, he has blond hair, a square jaw and a good smile. Check out the pictures of him in his profile. The guy just says "Steve Rogers" to me. Plus, he is actually still in his 20's currently (29), so he won't have to worry about developing crow's feet or gray hair any time soon. What do you all think?

Is six feet tall tall enough to play Captain America? He looks a little foofy to be Cap in those IMDB shots, but it wouldn't be fair to judge until I saw a photo in which his hair, makeup, etc. was designed around a context more similar to Cap. I didn't see Speed Racer, or I might have such an example.

How about The Middleman's Matt Keeslar? He's perfect for a clean-cut hero type, and he's got the classic square jaw and deep voice and a very muscular build. I've been thinking he'd be a terrific Superman, but he could just as easily be Cap.

I don't think the movie characters have to match their comic counterparts in every respect. Robert Downey Jr. is 43, which is probably significantly older than Tony Stark is in the comics. The movie X-Men are wildly different in their relative ages from their comics counterparts.

Yes! My thoughts too. The moment I saw him on Middleman, I said "There's Captain America." Now if only they can find a part for Natalie Morales too.

The main reason that I would insist on Cap being played by a young actor has more to do with historical than comic book accuracy. After all, the average age for US soldiers in WWII was something ridiculously young. Even captains (of the military rather than superheroic variety!) averaged in their early 30s IIRC. Having said that, the much lauded Saving Private Ryan got away with having actors who were arguably too old for the ranks they were playing (Ted Danson being probably the best example), so I suppose a fantasy movie doesn't need to be held to too high a standard of authenticity.

I'm not sure Barrowman's quite right for the role myself, and I kind of like Who/Torchwood.


Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Dark Knight) might be a good choice.

I like Dr Who and Torchwood, but Barrowman annoys the hell out of me. Partly because he's so ridiculously ubiqituous on BBC tv. It seems the BBC is incapable of making any programme without at least one appearance from him. And apart from anything else, I think he's all wrong and too old for Captain America. He's more the Superman type, I think.

Mark Valley is also too old and too short. And frankly, too lacking in charisma and presence. He's a definite tv star - I don't see him toplining a tentpole movie like this.

The only established name I could imagine in the part is Josh Holloway from Lost, but I still think the unknown route, a la Reeve, Routh or Jackman is the way to go.

I agree.

Although, I do want Thomas Dekker to play Bucky. And maybe Powers Boothe as the Red Skull.
