MontalKhan, brownfaced?

I've always thought probably not, but if they did? So what?

But here's a screengrab from the first season of Mission: Impossible. Did they "brownface" him here, too, or did he just have a great tan? Two shows in the same studio in the same year, with the same makeup job for two different characters?

I think it's just a really nice suntan, but you decide for yourself.

I alway thought it would be his original look. He is Mexikhan after all....;)

There is a faction of fandom who say Montalban was brownfaced for "Space Seed." I disagree.

Here's a chance for the outspoken few to argue their point of view. ;)

He was Mexican by birth, but his parents were from Spain, not Mexico. That looks like brown from a bottle to me.

Can it be proved, or disproved?

How about we all look for examples of Ricardo Montalban in other shows from the same time period? Let's see if he looked the same in other appearances.

Can what be proved? His actual skin color? How much he could tan?

In Escape From the Planet of the Apes

He looks to have fairly light skin in the Chrysler commercials he did as well.

Didn't every single actor on Star Trek (or any show for that matter) have makeup on their face? Spock had the yellowish tint. I'm sure Shatner had a base on to even out his skin tone. The women definitely did. It would only make sense to darken the actor playing an Indian a bit. Why not?

Yes. Everyone gets made up. If you look closely, you can often see where the makeup ends on the actor's necks.

What's supposed to be the idea behind Benedict Cumberbatch's Khan? Plastic surgery? Voice modification? Not that Montalban's Khan was the correct ethnicity either but if we're expected to believe they're the same character then shouldn't the new Khan at least be Mexican in appearance? I just don't get how he's a white English guy.

What should a Mexican look like? As mentioned, Montalban's parents were from Spain.

So any two actors playing the same role should be of the same ethnic background?

Uh oh. I guess either Robert De Niro or Marlon Brando shouldn't have been cast as Vito Corleone
