Moffat's surprises

There is another chance GUYS. 2015! The 10 year anniversary of the revived series of Doctor Who! Another chance for something grand to happen.

On the other hand, was The Five Doctors all that good, once you took away the nostalgia factor of seeing Troughton, Pertwee and their companions (and stock footage of Baker and someone pretending to be Hartnell)?

The Five Doctors is great! I love that story!

Mr Awe

I loved it too.

It's the only classic story I own on DVD, though that's as much due to the fact there are no collected series' like there are with the new run.

Which is a reason why I doubt the rumors of another gap year in 2015. :)

The other, major reason is that I don't see the BBC resting Doctor Who again so soon, especially not after whatever they do to establish Capaldi in his first series in 2014.

He must dislike Doctor Who from his experience is all I can figure. It's got to be MORE than simply moving on. He must dislike it. He must think it has defined him and he's running from it.

I don't think people would be asking SO MANY questions if he was less prickly, though. It's like how journalists hone in on prickly football managers during a press conference. It just makes it worse.

The 50th would've been employment and money for him. And it would've made a lot of people happy to see him again as The Doctor. He didn't do it. At this point I don't believe it was for story reasons. He just didn't want to do it because it's Doctor Who and he wants no part of DW post-2005.

I wonder if it had been different if Billie Piper called him and asked? I doubt it, but I wonder.

Eccleston is proud of the work he did on Doctor Who. He's glad that he was able to do something for children and be a hero for children. He speaks glowingly of the word Steven Moffat and Joe Ahearne did on his series. He doesn't hate Doctor Who. If he hated Doctor Who, he wouldn't have taken two meetings with Moffat about the anniversary special.

People ask Eccleston about Doctor Who because it was a high-profile gig for him and perhaps because they feel he hasn't been forthcoming in previous interviews. I think Eccleston's reticence to discuss his time on Doctor Who stems from professionalism and courtesy, and it's a courtesy that has likewise been extended to him. Eccleston is polite when talking about Doctor Who; likewise, the people he worked with are polite when talking about him.

We can speculate all day about why Eccleston didn't do the anniversary special. I think his stated reason -- that just as one doesn't bathe in the same bath water twice, he doesn't revisit a job once it's done -- is perfectly satisfactory. If there are other reasons beyond that, especially knowing that he likes Moffat's writing, we're not privy to them and we're unlikely to ever be. He has his reasons, and that's sufficient for me.

On the contrary, I think The Five Doctors is superior to The Two Doctors. Robert Holmes writes great 25-minute episodes, but really struggled with the 45-minute format. The story was twice as long, and really boring. And, not mention a rather shoddy affair - the Second Doctor's barely in two of the three episodes, and Hines is wasted as Jamie. What a wasted opportunity.

At least in The Five Doctors each Doctor had something to do. Sure, again the Second Doctor got the short stick, and the First Doctor got way more screen-time than he should've, but each Doctor had something to do (well, maybe not the Fourth Doctor).

Not realy. Five doctors had more doctors with more screen time, but barley any story behind it while two doctors; although it had less screen time with the 2nd doctor, it had more story behind it, and the absolutely prefect blend of humour and seriousness.

I guess you're right. I don't hate the guy for not wanting to do it, it just disappoints me that he's become one of "those actors" that doesn't revisit the past.

Although "my" Doctor is Tennant, I started my fandom in 2005 with series one and Eccleston. I liked his Doctor. I wish we could see him again. Billie and David returned for the 50th. Perhaps others have too...we'll have to wait and see. I just wish we had Eccleston as well. That was Moff's original plan and it sucks that we'll never see it.

That really just shows that they should've focused on the entire 50 years for this anniversary and then just the new series in 2015.

I wouldn't expect anything too grand in 2015. Maybe they'll somehow convince RTD to come back and write some sort of special where The Doctor is reunited with a companion from his era, involving Judoon and Slitheen. Could be fun.

Thing is, the Slitheen would be perfect for an anniversary special of the nu series since that two parter was the first to be filmed. Or was at least part of the first filming block. And the Judoon are just all kinds of awesome. Sco po mo jo do ko zo lo. Maho!

I get the distinct feeling they are. There may not be any new footage of "classic" Doctors, but there is a very clear and understandable reason for that - you/we may not agree with it but it's there. That doesn't mean there won't be any classic characters/elements at all (indeed, while I've largely managed to remain unspoiled, I can state categorically that there are);

The plot and cast of the 50th Anniversary Special have been much debated by Whovians worldwide. However, Moffat was less keen to reveal details about the true content of the show, beyond that fan favourites David Tennant and Billie Piper were known to be returning. He said,

“Well, do you know, all I've ever revealed about what we’re doing in Doctor Who is anything that we've filmed outside, so I'm rather reticent about what’s actually in there. I notice people are making up stuff about who or what is or is not in that special, You’re just going to have to wait until November to find out the truth.”

He also refused to be drawn on which of the rumours about the show were closest to the mark and which caused him the most amusement. He warned about jumping to conclusions too early.

“Most of them are quite fanciful and some are entertainingly angry,” he said, “People who make up their own theories about what is or is not in the special and then make a YouTube film about how angry they are about their own theory... Oh, I love you all, Doctor Who fans, but now and then don’t believe everything you hear or don’t hear.”

Personally I like the Five Doctors Special, it was an old fashioned quest story all the various Doctors were in their element. The Three Doctors were well done too in my mind. But as to any surprises I'm not looking forward to anything special from the special, a surprise or two would be nice but probably just done for show and have little value to the story itself.

The Slitheen were fun in the Sarah Jane Adventures, but I never want to see them in the parent show again ever!
