Moffat confirms at least 14 episodes of S7 (includes Xmas special)

The Radio Times has posted a video interview with Steven Moffat shot at the annual Covers Party. He states that Season 7 is going to be at least 14 episodes in length because the Christmas special is going to be rolled into the season this year because of the autumn start.

This got missed by some of the news sites, but before Christmas Moffat announced that production is to begin in mid-February:

But no word on this fabled Easter Special someone was touting about in the Sherlock thread in the GTM forum. No surprise there.

So I guess that means the season will be split into two halves, with the Christmas Special in the middle? That's certainly different.

So 7

then X mas Special as part of the season

then 6 more in Easter onwards ?

There are plenty of classic villains I'd love to see again, but for some reason watching this Doctor go up against the Daleks just doesn't interest me all that much.

That's the common fan belief, yes, but we actually don't know how or when season 7 will be broadcast, and it's far enough out that the BBC itself may not know.

Personally I would predict around the 13th/20th October start date. Finishing towards the end of November. Then the Xmas special with the remainding starting Easter Saturday. As for following season I would expect that to take a mid season break from the 23-11-13. When we have our DW night, with no doubt some sort of Big(ish) episode.

Sounds right, although it might be the opposite (7 on the back end with the Christmas episode as the break). Although, either way, they need to broadcast an episode either on November 23 (or 24) or December 14 (or 15). Basically, the anniversary of An Unearthly Child.

Which is when I calculated my date from assuming the last episode (aside from the Xmas) to air this year on the 24-11-12

For now i'm getting the feeling they're putting more thought and re-arrangement into the Anniversary than they need to. Can't the occassion just be marked an epic 90 minute tele-movie instead of re-tooling the format for 12-18 months? I care far less about the running history of the series than I do the present quality of it.

Changing the format of how the show is aired has nothing to do with the 50th anniversary. It's a combination of the production moving to a new studio and Moffat's belief on how the show should be aired.

An Epic 50th anniversary special is planned for next year.

Correct, plus the fact it's been established that Doctor Who is actually considered to be underperforming in a spring timeslot due to the weather often drawing people out at 6 PM, and competing broadcasts of sporting events. A fall/over-the-winter broadcast is considered a more viable option for the series to score higher viewership.

Of course the fact that Doctor Who tends to perform better in the ratings when it's actually aired in prime time, post-7 p.m., still hasn't sunk in. It's a holdover from the fact the BBC still considers it de facto a children's program. They'd be horrified to see it airing at 8 and 9 pm like it does in North America. Because of course children go to bed at 7 pm, right?

Airing it 9 o'clock would be silly imo, but Merlin did v well in the 8pm time slot. Personally I'd like to see it on around 7pm, but frankly I don't mind much, I'm going to watch it no matter what :)

i just want it to air after SCD on Saturday nights and then proceed to annihilate X-Factor in the ratings, like the Daleks should annihilate Cowell.

Actually I don't see the problem. Certainly doesn't hurt it over here. The only reason why Doctor Who would not work at 9 PM is that in the UK the post-9 PM timeslots are generally reserved for more adult fare, whether that be Torchwood or stuff like Rome that contain content you'd never be allowed to show on mainstream US networks at any hour. The audience would follow Doctor Who to such an hour. But realistically 7 or 8 is the more realistic time slot, and as noted Merlin does fine at 8, and that's a show that (unlike Doctor Who) occasionally does episodes that are specifically geared for kids (thinking Season 3's infamous goblin episode).

The other probblem is that it would be up against the likes if the X-Factor/Britain's Got Talent, that said Merlin did fine against X-Factor (though by all accounts X-Factor was rubbish this year)

Merlin was only on in the 8pm time slot this series, before then it's always been on earlier, and they specifically said it was because it was slightly darker this year.

Reaslistically given Who is technically for the whole family, it would be daft to put it on too late, the future of the show isn't strictly speaking any of us, it's the 5,6,7,8 etc year olds who've started watching now and hopefully might continue to watch.

Personally I don't care if it's on at 6 or 7, I'd just like it if it was fairly consistant--you won't ever always get it on at 7pm because shows around it vary in their timings (For example Strictly)
