Moffat and Barrowman fall out

I think the only way to make Torchwood return would be to re-introduce Jack in DW and build a foundation again like they did the first time around with the Cardiff rift. Too much time has past to pick up where it left off; for both Jack and the series. As long as the quality is "Children of Earth " caliber, I have no problem with Torchwood returning. If its more "Miracle Day", I'll pass.

It's one of those puzzling things: RTD retook control of Torchwood after two seasons, and rapidly destroyed the format he'd developed as the non-Who Excalibur. If he wasn't happy with season one it makes sense for him to reclaim it, but while brilliant, Children of Earth effectively ends the series as an ongoing format.

IIRC, the original plan with Children of Earth was to end Torchwood. Then it turned out to be such a smash hit causing RTD to re-evaluate those plans. Unfortunately, he really didn't know what made Children of Earth the success it was, and his attempts to make lightening strike twice with Miracle Day resulted in it being in many ways a carbon copy of Children of Earth.

I always felt one of the problems with Miracle Day was that it was too long. The five episode structure of CoE worked well to tell a long story but Miracle Day started to drag from the halfway point.

Eve Myles talked at Shore Leave a few years ago about something Barrowman did during the filming of Torchwood's "Countrycide." It was cold and miserable, they ended up huddling together to stay warm, and somehow it ended up that he was smacking her in the head with his, and I quote Myles, "his todger." "I thought he was patting me in the head, and it was his todger!"

She got her revenge. She stuffed sausages in Barrowman's boots, and his dog attacked the boots and destroyed them.

All I can think about it the call to HR...
...and HR having to call Barrowman to have a little talk.

I don't think that's necessary; if the writing is good and the characters and format are reintroduced well, as DW was in 2005, all that's needed is a decent time slot and promotion. It's only been five years, nothing compared to the sixteen that DW was off-air as a regular series. The only people for whom too much time has passed are the children, and the show isn't aimed at them anyway; re-introducing Jack and the TW format in DW is the best way to make it more accessible to the younger audience, which is probably not ideal if you want something like 'Children of Earth'.

The problem was that Miracle Day was originally planned out as a five-part story, like Children of Earth. But Starz requested a ten episode season, so the story got stretched out.

I don't really know why Moffat would be the roadblock. Torchwood hasn't really been connected to Who at all beyond the origin of Captain Jack. Even there, the Jack of Torchwood doesn't really have the gregarious personality of the Jack of Doctor Who.

It's odd to think that Torchwood has now been dead for longer than it was alive.

I've always had a soft spot for Torchwood personally. Yes I will agree that there are several episodes that are not very good but I'd quite happily watch any of the episodes over and over. Apart from Children of Earth. That was an incredible mini-series but so harrowing to watch. I really don't think I could manage to watch it again.

I'm quite impressed that they didn't do the obvious thing with Rhys though and kill him off early as that would have been so easy to do to propel Gwen into Torchwood, especially as Torchwood did take great delight with killing off its cast.

Not really, They didn't actually off any of their main cast until the end of season 2 when they thought the show was ending anyway. They thought something similar in Children of Earth when they killed off Ianto.

I think the real problem for Miracle Day (apart from standard fare issues such as weak plot and obvious padding) is that you can't really fit it into the so-called Whoniverse. The whole premise is something you can't really forget (even compared to crashing the clock tower, ghost shifts or the sky catching fire) plus the ending looks like something tacked on at the last minute without much forethought. It would be difficult to carry Torchwood on from there or reintegrate it with the parent show.

Yeah but you could say the same about Children of Earth. My only issue with both stories was "Where's the Doctor to fix this?"
