Modern Warfare 3 General Thread

It seems like there's a possibility we'll be getting some MW3 info at next week's GDC, as this article reports...

The folks at That Videogame Blog claim that press have received dog tags with a link to the website findmakarov. The tags include the message “end the war” and give mention to General Shepherd, Modern Warfare 2’s Big Bad.

A countdown shows that whatever’s going down will transpire in under five days, which puts it nicely in line with GDC. It would make sense, seeing as how Modern Warfare 2 was first unveiled at GDC 2009.

...so I figured it was probably a good time to start a general thread so we can discuss all the news and info about the upcoming release.

The first thing that comes to mind, is the fact that they're referencing Makarov and Shepherd indicates that the rumours of MW3 being a prequel were possibly false.

Also, I can't get that Find Makarov site to work.

Makarov? didn't he die?

or was he the guy at the boneyard? i forget who's who out of the villains...

Makarov went into hiding after Shepherd's men tried to kill him at the boneyard. Afterwards, he contacted Price and gave him the location of Shepherd's base (the enemy of my enemy bit). That was the last we heard from him in MW2, so he's still alive somewhere and presumably still in control of the Ultranationalists.

I think I'll wait to hear reviews of this one. I enjoyed MW2, but with so much of Infinity Ward leaving after the whole fiasco between Jason West, Vince Zampella, and Activision, I'm hesitant to see if whoever was left are able to pull this off.

From the rumours that are going around, it seems Sledgehammer are making this one, possibly in conjunction with (what's left of) Infinity Ward.

I imagine we'll get a clearer picture when/if the GDC announcement is made. Anything before that is largely rumour and speculation.

Last I heard, it was rumoured that IW and Sledgehammer are working on the SP, and Raven are doing the MP.

Think I'll wait to see what the reviews are sounding like before I get it.

I'm never going to buy another Activision CoD game again.

Thanks for your input, but nobody really cares.

I was kinda hoping not to have this thread devolve into another "I hate CoD/Activision" shitfest. Aside from the fact that it detracts from the purpose of the thread, it's fucking boring. And predictable.

Writing off a game on such an arbitrary basis is naive, but I have to admit, I'm probably more cautious over this one than I've been over any of the others previously.

That's due in large part to the unknown - suffice to say that IW are a shell of their former selves. Sledgehammer and Raven I don't know a great deal about so could be great, could be terrible, just don't know.

Plus there are other factors, like the subscription thing that Kotick keeps banging on about.

I would never write the game off on a whim, but for the first time, I'll not be saying that this is a definite purchase, I'll wait and see how the land lies towards release time. :)

That's totally fair enough and understandable. What irks me are the people who just come in and post one line crap about not buying CoD Activision games. No-one cares, it's not relevant to a news/info thread, and most of the time it just stirs up trouble. We already know there are people like Chaos who are sick of CoD, so why do they feel the need to tell us every time there's a CoD thread?

I'm not worried. Activision have stated a few times recently that they will never charge for CoD multiplayer. If they charge for anything, it may be some kind of premium service, but the online play as we know it will remain free. Now that they've said that, they can't go back on it without pissing off the existing fanbase, which will cost them money in the end, so it would be futile to even try it.

Can't fault you there. I'll be keeping a close eye on the development of the game, simply because there are new devs involved.

Yeah, no argument here. If you're not bothered with CoD any more then why come into the thread.....

I believe them when they say that online will be free, and agree that it'll probably be for premium content, but if that includes anything that puts me at a disadvantage, ie. they get more/better weapons/perks than me, then I doubt I'll play that game. Like I said, need to wait and see exactly what it looks like closer to release. :)

Personally, I think if they did charge a subscription for a premium service on the console versions, it would be more to do with dedicated servers.
You could pay a fee to play on dedicated servers with their own game modes and lobbies, which is something a lot of CoD fans have been crying out for on consoles, or you could continue to play for free with the same host-based setup they have now. That kinda makes more sense than anything else.

Whether it would take off or not is another matter.

if they don't put dedicated servers in MW3, i will probably skip MP. that was the biggest bone-headed decision i've seen in FPS games in a long time.

i thought Makarov was the russian terror guy, but was muddling him up with Zakhaev and al-Asad since i recently re-played MW1...

wonder how it'll go; Ranger/American campaign fighting in Russia and Soap campaign hunting Makarov to clear his & Price's names seems best bet...

Makarov is the Russian terrorist. He's the one who leads the attack on the airport in "No Russian". He steps in as leader of the Ultranationalists after Zakhaev is killed at the end of MW1.

yeah, i meant that i was sure he was who he is, but briefly thought, 'hang on, isn't he the one armed guy, no, wait that was Zakhev and al-asad's the arab nut. which means makarov's the guy in the boneyard, hang on, didn't we kill that bastard?'

I wonder if MW3's protagonists will have more prominent speaking roles, like Mason in Black Ops. I hope so, I thought that was the best part about Black Ops' campaign.
