Ruminations:
Coco is back! *squee* So we get to see Applejack and Rarity working together to solve a friendship crisis. I swear, no matter what happens, all of my RariJack friends are going to have something to say about all of this. Anyhoo, my big thing is getting to see Coco again. You can't not love her character (you can't!) and I'm curious to see just what kind of crisis has presented itself in the busy streets of Manehattan!

Coco!

And from a couple of the promo images, they're giving us some Rarijack shipping from the get go, and probably some coco&marshmellow before the end of it.

Man, she's getting around this season.

I already know two authors who have started on the fanfics.
It's going to be great to see Coco again. I just don't know what it is about her, but she's so adorable!

C-

That was...a deeply bland and boring episode of pure filler and nothing of note except one thing that;

HOLY SHIT WHY!?

They destroy something deeply personal and important to a mane character then just replace it convenietly at the end, trashing the old one, for no reason?

I mean they didn't even go down the route of leaving her without it for a couple of weeks and have Rarity make her a new one so she was wearing something made by one of her friends.

Just the crowning turd on the bad writing for this episode.

I have a feeling this episode is not going to be well-received for two reasons. One, Chemy mentioned, and two, the episode did feel kind of average.

Still, it had its moments:

When, during the performance, the construction worker sighed and said "my pop used to bring me here," which really affected me for some reason.

Rarity's friendship advice booth. The kicker is where she gives up and says "good grief!" Totally a Lucy/Charlie Brown vibe. :D

Coco. Coco was too adorable the whole time. Especially when we got to see filly Coco in the photo album.

My Rarijack shipping senses were off the charts!

All in all, not incredible, but not too bad. I'd give it a B.

Also, the music was riffing off 'Linus and Lucy'.
As for the other thing:

I completely forgot about that, you're right. Of course, I thought it was a one off sight gag, but technically it's canon (blerch at that word!), so it works!

Also, I didn't notice the music. I'll have to go back and listen. :D

You missed a sightgag, sir.
There was another pony wearing a shirt like Charlie Brown's!

Wow, there's so much going on in that scene!

I'm three minutes in and....uh, why, exactly, can't Twilight go along if she wants? Will the map punish them somehow if they don't follow its orders to the letter or something? It requested two, and three went instead! That was just the start of the horror... I don't see how that would mess anything up.

And why are they taking its orders so unquestioningly anyway? Who's controlling it? Where are these friendship trouble reports coming from? Doesn't it bother anyone else that it's tied into their very bodies and can alter their cutie marks? Why isn't Twilight curious about how it works or why it does what it does?

Why did the writers create a plot-generating MacGuffin for this season that doesn't make any sense?

Third act edit: Unless deconstructing the reliability of the map turns out to be the point of this episode. It would make as much sense as anything with the way it's unfolded so far. Dare I hope?

Edit edit: Nope.

"Meh" episode all around. The first half showed promise and it had some really great AJ and Rarity character stuff, but the main point of the story was blah and the conflict and conclusion were weak. I'd rather have had 22 minutes solid of Rarity being ridiculous and AJ acting embarrassed.

The Map and castle are born from the Tree of Harmony the same as the Elements, so if we mistrust the map, we have to go right back to the pilot and beyond to imply the Elements have been mind warping Celestia and Luna and the mane6 in making them it's avatars.

It's roots seem to grow all over Equus, it's the planet asking them for help, I doubt it's anything sinister as it keeps sending them to help people.

And yes, if it wants it's avatars to grow and learn, it would defeat the point to send along someone who will not benefit and have them remove the role of the others.

Twilight's role has changed, and she's growing restless because of it, she'll settle down in time.

Only now got around to watching the episode.

OMG! They had the Mad Men ponies in the background, and pretty extensively, too. :D
Joan, Peggy and Roger are watching the play and later, after it, they chat with Pony Draper and another pony (I wonder if she's supposed to be a character from the show as well). Now, that Mad Men is off the air, it's nice to know there's a place where the characters live on - forever!!! *cue evil laugh*

So, no way that's not an A episode for me. ;) But really, I liked it. I thought the solution would be that Applejack would start with the work in the park and then be joined by neighbourhood ponies helping here. But it wasn't quite that simple.
