Ruminations:
Here's the season finale! The last two episodes of the season. Every new season they have tried to top the previous seasons, and I expect this will be no different. So will it be full of fun, adventure, and awesome displays of magical prowess heretofore unknown? We'll find out!

As it is a season finale, this one gets the bigger poll. (heh)

Now, I have seen this episode, so I'm going to post my thoughts below, but in spoiler code. Anyone else who wants to review or discuss before the U.S. release today must remember to put theirs in spoiler code as well.

So Starlight Glimmer is helping Spike and Twilight sort through old books, when a message arrives via our favorite mailmare for Starlight Glimmer. It's an invitation to the Sunset Festival in her old haunt, Our Town. She has been invited by her friends to join the festivities, which of course brings up old fears and insecurities about who she was as a pony. Twilight suggests she goes, and brings a friend to help her. Of course, Twilight means herself, but Starlight actually chooses Trixie to travel with her. When they arrive at Our Town, Starlight's old friends seem very happy to see her and even ask her to take part in being a judge for a baking contest and how to setup the festival. This scares Starlight, who fears becoming like her old self, and so she runs away, with Trixie helping her make her escape.

When they return to Ponyville, everything is strange. None of the Mane Six seem to behave like they did before (lulz). Later that night, Starlight is contacted by Luna through her dreams, only to discover that Changelings have replaced her friends, as well as all of the Princesses. So it is up to Twilight and Trixie to do something. Before they can act, however, they meet Thorax who tells them that Cadance, Shining Armor, and Flurry Heart have been captured as well. As they try to formulate a plan, they are intruded upon by Discord, who decides he wants to help out of concern for Fluttershy.

I really enjoyed this episode. We got new lore (how Chrysalis' throne absorbs magic), and we get to see new places (the Changeling Hive). Discord always makes things fun, and his antics here are terrific, as he is forced to work without his magic. Trixie cracks me up as usual, and we do see that while she's not a bad pony, she's not what you'd call a really *good* pony either. Trixie looks out for Trixie, and Starlight, since Starlight is her best friend. I like seeing Trixie grow like that, and figure down the line she'll become more true good than grey area. Also, I laughed my ass off at her mumblings during the scene where Starlight arrives to wake her up.

We get to see Thorax expand on his dimension just a bit, and we find out how deep his friendship with Spike actually goes. He loves Spike, and I'd wager Spike loves him, and it's so very sweet. Of course, Starlight herself has worked to apply her hard won friendship lessons, and it leads us to the climax where we finally discover just where the Changelings went wrong.

This part was the best part for me, because we gained even more new lore. Apparently, changelings don't look like black husks with blue eyes, but are actually quite beautiful creatures. Anypony with greater lore knowledge may remember the changelings being known as the Flutterponies. It's mostly muddled lore, but it exists, and now is a part of MLP:FIM canon. The changelings are actually quite lovely when they're giving love freely, and giving love erases the hunger in their hearts, so that the changelings are no longer evil, and Thorax becomes their leader! I loved the reunification scenes during this moment. This whole scene was also enjoyable because I was completely surprised and still reeling by what happened to the Changelings. Did you notice they no longer had holes in their bodies? I did!

Of course, this was also a chance for Chrysalis to repent and come to know good by befriending Starlight, but at the last second, she rejects the offer and flees. I'm okay with this, as it seems clear while the other changelings were just drones and embittered by years of withholding love from themselves and others, Chrysalis truly is evil. She should stay that way for at least a while longer yet. Plus, it gives us another enemy for season 7, possibly.

I think this was a strong season finale with a strong moral lesson (don't withhold love as it only hurts you, not the other pony), with solid characterizations. It's the first season finale I've ever seen without the Mane Six as the leads, so I'm kind of curious where this will lead into the next season. After all, Starlight keeps getting called a leader, and that she can lead, and I know this is going to go somewhere big.

Also, regarding Starlight Glimmer, I knew I felt good about her when I saw her trembling in fear, and covering her head with her hooves, back at Our Town. It was at that moment I had absolutely no doubt she had truly changed. While I have long since grown warm to her, this episode made me fond of her. Good job, Starlight.

All in all, a great season finale, with a good story and a great lesson. I give it an "A," and it takes its place as one of my favorite finale episodes.

A+ from me!
I wasn't sure what to expect but I am thrilled at this episode.
It's clear that Twilight and Trixie will be friends with a very great deal of work, and I'm glad they kept that in.
I loved that Starlight was cautious about assuming a leadership role after abusing her powers. She's made some mistakes in reformation, so it makes sense she'd be scared. But she really grew up here.
I also love the ending of the episode. The Flutterponies have beefed up in this timeline! And it's amazing that we didn't have a magic-loaded ending. Love is the answer and that's what we need to share.
Great season finale.

Well, I'd already seen it once, from us getting it first (ah, just like the good old Babylon 5 days). Probably a good thing, since no-one had mentioned that it was on half an hour earlier than normal - thankfully, I went to check on my usual stream (Spazz) just as it was getting started.

You know, after last season's finale, I really wasn't sure I was going to like seeing Starlight Glimmer as part of the cast. But, I've enjoyed every episode she's had a major role in - and this one is no different.

I mean, it addressed things that we thought were brushed past too quickly last year - namely, dealing with The Village and what those characters would think of her. I really liked how she was unwilling to even consider taking charge of anything, but ended up doing it anyway.

The "interesting array of secondary characters" were brilliant bouncing off of each other. Trixie being terrified the whole way felt entirely true to the character, and I liked that they didn't just become heroic.

The only thing it was missing was a song, really.

I really want to see Glim-Glam and Sunset meet up. I know it will never happen, but I really want it.

Uh no.

Flutter Ponies live in Flutter Valley, which lies across a desert from Dream Valley, guarded by giant spiders. The Flutter Ponies were not insects, their queen had a single antenna but that's it. They were the fairy ponies of their day, with an "utter flutter" wind bending power that none of the villains could compete with. Named for flowers, any of this rining a bell?

They have abolsutely nothing to do with these monstrosities. Ugh.

Eh, I was spitballing on that one. They just reminded me of the flutterpony story, though it does seem the connection is tenuous at best.

I'm hoping it will happen next season. Shoot, it could happen in the 2017 movie, or maybe one of the EQG specials coming next year. 2017 is going to be chock full of pony. :D

Well, I like the changelings' new look. I wonder what will happen with Chrysalis, though... I wish Fluffle Puff were there to help her get better...

Yes! I knew I wasn't the only one who wanted to see a FlufflePuff/Chryssie episode. Hell, I'd watch an entire series based on those two. :D

I'd prefer she stayed evil, it's how her character works. Discord is never going to actually change because he wasn't "evil" in the true sense to begin with. They just taught him the value of the companionship of the creatures he played tricks on.

Trixie was never a villain either, Sombra and Tirek have been dealth with. Flim, Flam and Starlight are sociopaths that will probebly never learn what it is to feel the full guilt any other pony would about hurting others.

Chrysalis may have been acting in a cruel-ish way but she did it as she thought she was doing what was best for her children. Her priorities have been warped over the years, but it's who she is. Stealing her children away is about the last thing they could expect to make her turn "good", only convincing her ponies are her enemies.

Yeah, I doubt highly she'll ever turn good, which is fine with me. I am curious as to whether we'll see more changeling episodes in the future, and how that will pan out.

I wonder if Chrysalis ever looked as the other Changelings look now...
Good question. Perhaps the changelings once looked as they do now, but forgot it over time as they hoarded love instead of gave it away? Who knows? Maybe they'll explore that theme in the next season.
