Ruminations:
Ooh! We're going to see the ideas found in so many fanfics brought to the screen! I am very excited about this episode. Thoughts?

Solid episode. We get to visit The Crystal Empire again, which is always fun, and we get to see Flurry Heart who is just pure adorable. Twilight, Starlight, and Spike are fun travel companions, and I hope to see them going elsewhere together this season. I like that we get a better idea of how Changelings are hatched, and how they normally develop. We see that Thorax is an anomaly, but that if he can change maybe the others can, too? Who knows. Anyway, the episode was fun and enjoyable, and the only quibble I have with it would be that it feels very rushed. This could have been a really well done two-parter, because it needs a little more fleshing out. Spike's song was very well done, and I'm glad we finally got to see him really deliver on that front. So, all things considered, I give it a solid "B".

Yeah, the end , I felt, was a tad rushed. But I kept thinking of TNGs "I, Borg," and how Spike was kind of like Geordi with Hugh...
Yeah, I understand they have to push things a little faster in order to fit into that 22 minute timeslot, just, I think they could have made this a two-parter.

In fairness, I'd like every episode to be 44 minutes. :D

I wish it could've been an hour... Cadance would've had to kind of be Captain Picard in this one...
"You're a changeling. You will absorb this empire's love and send it to the queen! You will assist her!"
"I will not!"
"...What did you say?"
"I'm Thorax and I will not assist the queen."

Ooh. This has to happen now.

Hey, it's "Shark Tale" but with ponies, and a dragon in Will Smith's fish part!

That said, still quite a fun episode. Neat to see that Sunburst is effectively part of the Crystal Empire's royal court... Which means that three non-Crystal ponies AND the entire Royal Guard are the ruling force over an entire subspecies of Equestria (and raising another non-Crystal as the heir-apparent to the throne). Still dunno what to make of that symbolism.

I think there's got to be crystal in most of the ponies of Equestria. There was a time when the crystal ponies interbred with non-crystal ponies, but until very recently, the crystal ponies themselves weren't part of the actively breeding gene pool. I suspect Cadance has more in her heritage than she's aware of.

Cadance's family were the last heriditary Crystal rulers of the Empire before Sombra stole the throne (IDW Comics) and the lot of them were ousted from the Empire to die. Cadance is the "crystal princess" prophecied to return (though from their point of view, Cadance's family left maybe 10-20 years ago).

They survived in the north as a settlement (hinted at as the Igloos in the map) until Cadance, her parents left her as an orphan either because they couldn't continue the line or no longer cared. (G. M. Berrows novel)

She's the last living descendant of a group exiled from 1000 years ago, and it's made clear they avoided the native Equestrian population apart from imparting the crystal to Celestia.

So no, Crystal Ponies are a pure breed.

And for some reason ponies give birth to full species, never a hybrid. Cadance's group must have lost some of their sheen, but Cadance's colouration and mane are different to any other pony showing her heritage, and a lot of why she was allowed to become an Alicorn, as Celestia saw it as a birth right rather than in need of a test.

That's another weird thing, everypony that became an Alicorn or was considered, had a much clearer reason than Twilight, who even into season 6 seems to be completely not living up to the whole reason of her gaining that power, years later, and Celestia is getting sick of her shit by the look of it.

Yeah, after she became an Alicorn, she just went back to being good old Twiley. I'm fine with that, but it makes the whole Princess storyline superfluous.

Twilight was destined to take on silicone magic and beat the plot out of Tirek. Then she had to spread the importance of friendship across Equestria. She's playing her part, though it isn't big now.

True, but while I'm comfortable with Alicorn Twilight, unicorn Twilight was a lot more fun, IMO.

Especially when Equestria is now shown to be significantly larger, with most of the population not even knowing the Princesses, or taking note of what even the more powerful ones say.

When you can save the world multiple times and have 90% of people talk down to you, one day you're just not going to bother.

Equestrian society seems to need a bigger shift than one Alicorn or anypony can bring about in a lifetime.

I think that Ponyville is a microcosm in Equestria. It is the center of friendship.
