Ruminations:
I've been looking forward to the concept of this episode for some time. We're actually getting to head back to Canterlot, and see Twilight's life, or portions of it anyway, before she discovered the magic of friendship, before she left for Ponyville. I love solid character episodes, and I really think we have one here.

That was a really good episode, we got a lot of backstory, loads of continuity, a pretty solid story, more Pinkie parties, a look at what could have been with Twilight etc

Starlight Glimmer is hiding at the top left when Twilight takes Moon Dancer out for dinner with the others.

And did that moonbeam that showed the flashback, and Twilight's surprise at that, look like Luna was projecting that scene on the moonlight for Twilight to see?

Minuette has a sugar/donut addiction, giving an angry unicorn a bat, nopony cleans up in Equestria, so much to take in, need to watch it all again.

The episode had some great callbacks. I love the message of this episode as well.

It was nice to see Twilight's old place at the palace. It was a strong whiff of nostalgia for me, because while I'm not sure how much time has passed for them, I know it has been 4 years since I saw the very first episode, and this just brought that feeling right back.

It was nice to see Twilight's old friends knew her well enough that they didn't take her leaving personally. It was also nice to see that Moondancer had a real reaction to Twilight's leaving, and I feel the tie-in from the first episode to now was beautifully done.

We also got to see filly Twilight studying! OMC! I must have squee'd the entire time she was talking.

Starlight Glimmer! I didn't see her until Chemy mentioned her, and I had to go back and look! Yikes!

This episode gets an "A" from me, for a strong message, and because Spike got some great lines.

I watched the pilot (and a few more episodes) on July 6th 2011 here with you all. So it's nearly my 4th brony anniversary, having such a callback episode right before that is amazing.

Also I'll be downloading the 1080 version Monday on the day itself, it's a neat little present from the staff in a way.

Indeed it is. It's hard to believe how long we've watched this show. If you would have asked me, 4 years ago, whether I would be so smitten with a show about pastel colored ponies to the point where I'd have a website, and long discussions about characters, I'd have probably said "yes, strange future person, by the way, how did you get into my bedroom and could you hand me my pants?" but that's beside the point.

Standout episode! And I'm glad how it showed Twilight's growth. I think this also may be a foreshadowing of her EqG counterpart...

Aw, what a nice episode. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
It was interesting to get some insights into Twilight's pre-Ponyville life. It was different than I imagined it but nice that she did actually have friends - even if she didn't cherish them enough at the time.
I had totally forgotten about Twilight's old place. Seems odd she never stayed there when she went back to Canterlot.

Someone posted the photo from the end of the episode with the 5 unicorns and is wondering if this was Celestia's first attempt at finding the elements. Maybe that is the case, and Tia just thought if Ponyville helped her socialise she'd come back to them a better pony.

And she happened to meet the real avatars of the elements, by random chance or something out of Tia's control. It makes you wonder how much she actually had control over or knew.

She and Moon Dancer are so identical, was it only the Sonic Rainboom that allowed Twilight to hatch Spike? did MD fail her test or never get to take it?

Either way, we have essentially another Twilight living in her library as she was 4-5 years ago, going on with the same studies.

My head is hurting from all this.

From the last scene it looked as if Moondancer stayed in her house, though. It would be interesting to find out whether she'll eventually end up using her knowledge for something or whether it will stay dead knowledge.
Hopefully, we'll see her and the others again in the future.

Also, I'm kinda thrilled we got to see Minuet. I have an unhealthy obsession with all the timeponies and thus a variety of her figures from the blindbags.

She has the key to Twilights library now, she'll likely fix it up and maybe move in at some point, it's not like anyone else is using it.

Minuette was great, I love how they had her constantly eating donuts and bouncing around on a sugar rush, just throwing out the dentist angle of it.

And derp, the photo does have all 6 unicorns.

Yup.

And now for the inevitable Inappropriate Screenshot of the Week Award:

Or something more light hearted:

To be honest, when I first saw Twilight's old Canterlot friends, I thought they were just being polite and sucking up because Twilight was a Princess. I'm glad to see I was wrong.

I watched the pilot again today, as mentioned earlier. But I noticed when they got to Pinkie's party welcoming Twilight at the library, the other unicorns where there already.

Moon Dancer planned a party on the day of the Summer Sun Celebration? a bit odd, unless she specifically wanted them to spend it with her at her party. Making it even worse as it looks like all 5 of them went to Ponyville, ouch.

Anyway I did find something pretty neat:

I don't know how people do this stuff so quickly.

This one was great. They really did their homework on the appearances of these ponies through the series - meaning that someone read the MLP wiki article on each and filled in a few places. :P

That Twilight would so instantly forget her cadre of Canterlot friends was a stretch, plus dropping in that someone like Lyra had been in Ponyville THE WHOLE TIME, *and* had been one of Cadence's bridesmaids along with the other two..! It does go a ways to show how little Twi was actually friends with this other group though, and frames up how her current group are REAL friends here. Good lesson for her.

M. A. Larson favourited a tweet I made about the episode. I...don't know how to feel about that.

*hides before Gep reads this*

I don't know what Gep will say, but all I can say is lucky! Though Andrea Libman once favorited a tweet I had made. :D

I'm pretty sure this means there are places in the fandom I can't go now.

Anyway, it's being great seeing such a positive reaction online to the episode, and it's got more people talking longer than anything since the premiere of the season.

If they have more of this kind of story coming up then I can't wait for the rest of the season. :D
