Ruminations:
Here's another CMC episode. So far I think they've been terrific. This one takes place in Aaaaappleloosa! What do you guys think? Do you think the CMC episodes are fun so far? Will they get their cutie marks any time soon?

I'm rather liking the CMC episodes and I like how it's being shown as a natural progression. The fillies have to grow up eventually and not all at the same rate. We even notice it with the older ponies. I'd argue last episode showed Dash growing a bit.

They're still going with the cutie mark magic theme for the season, and the idea of ponies not truely realising the meaning of their mark, or embracing it even when they get it.

I'm not sure the final message is as happy as they think it's meant to be, "you're a screwup and you always will be, go do it where you won't hurt as many people" is...questionable at best.

We see one of the only two tone equines outside of Pipsqueak. And a Mustang/Clydsedale horse at that. He's pretty damn big but adorable as a little colt.

Braeburn fans will be sort of happy that he's back, maybe not that he was there to be thumped around the entire episode. When he let the CMC away again I was half expecting the ad break to come back with him in another cast.

Sweetie Belle is finally using her magic, even if it's not quite that strong yet and she does drop a couple of things.

Country Pegasi lol, wasn't expecting that and don't see the appeal for them but alright.

It's not a bad episode but it was really there for the Cutie Magic thing they're going for, other than a few little shout outs it didn't stand out all that much.

Chem, I think I have to disagree with you here, and perhaps this is a YMMV...
A pony's cutie mark can be misread by the individual pony. If Troubleshoes' cutie mark truly meant bad luck, nothing would ever go right for him. But with this, he realizes he has an incredible talent for physical comedy. And to keep that fresh and original is hard work. I mean, how many pies to the face and objects to the... what is appropriate ponyspeak for gonads?... can you keep entertaining?
I think the idea is that you embrace your cutie mark rather than simply trying to fight it. Troubleshoes fought his mark, assuming that being a straight rodeo pony was his thing and nothing else would do.
Just my two bits. :alienblush:

But that's where the problem lies.

It's not so much that he's trying to do these things, they're happening to him whether he likes it or not.

Even in the final minutes, when he tried to join in, everything still kept going wrong and it was mainly through sheer luck people weren't harmed.

They're essentially laughing at someone with a physical disability that prevents him from having a normal life, relegating him to a circus act where his misfortune is laughed at.

His has no choice and can't help what terrible things happen to him, so just stumble and fail infront of people and their laughter makes it all better?

That seems really depressing and weird a thing to end on to me.

But did you notice that...
he was still fighting it? What he said to his cutie mark was, "don't get in my way." He was still fighting it. I suspect that if he didn't fight it, he'd be better able to control things.
If you'll remember, an ill-placed cutie mark causes nothing but grief (see "The Cutie Pox" and "Magical Mystery Cure"), but an accepted and well-placed cutie mark leads to un... bridled?... joy.

I know, and it's a pity it took him that long especially with the pony society. We're seeing just how little the magic of friendship seems to extend outside of Celestia's immediate societal influence.

He'll probably have a mostly happier life now, provided he doesn't take it too personally.

True, and I think the laughter was appreciated once it was understood. This episode was a decent episode, but it would fall under "unremarkable" for me, which is okay. The CMC are as adorable as ever, and it's nice to see Sweetie Belle learning how to use her magic. We know their cutie marks are coming, I'm just curious as to how it will affect them and what they'll be.

Braeburn getting ponked on the entire episode was fine with me, he's adorable when he's getting injured.

All in all, a solid "B" episode for me.

I really enjoyed this EP. It it shows that some ponies aren't what they seem. ;) Everyone thought the worst of Troubleshoes but he wasn't bad just klutzy and misunderstood.

Yep, found that a very weird thing. Wasn't happy with it. Thought it was very wtf.

I was also wtf'd over
the sherrif and townspeople having build him up as an awful villain over what? Knocking some barrels over? If it was funny to have all those hay bales fall on ponies from a great height then why wasn't stuff falling over funny before? It just didn't work. I suppose ponies are a bit naive though, remember they had build up a terrible fear over Zecora too. But this guy was going to be ARRESTED on sight! and practically lynch mobbed by angry ponies.

Voted B as far as Cutie Mark Crusaders ep goes.

Yeah, one of them having a literal pitchfork and willing to use it was way beyond okay for the show.

Someone is clumsy, lets eviserate them? I mean jesus this show has gone dark at times but that's going too far.

Did anyone else have a problem with the fact that "fillynapping" was lower on the rung of injustices than knocking over barrels? I mean, as far as they know, he's kidnapped three fillies, but no, they talk about feeling bad, and about barrels being knocked over, eventually coming to an understanding before finally addressing what should have been the biggest issue. It was "barrels, haystacks, why?! Oh, you're a klutz? Okay," and then they get to mentioning 'oh by the way, you kidnapped three children and that's bad, too'. Sure, we know he didn't, but they don't know that. For some reason, that has actually bothered me since I watched the episode yesterday.

I know, him apparently either convincing or taking three ~10 year old girls back to his cabin in the woods barely seems to matter to them. Few societies on Earth are that messed up to be so blind to child kidnapping.

Maybe the Buffalo's were right, maybe there is something very wrong with the Appleoosa Ponies. Why they wanted to be so far away from Celestia. Why Glimmer was able to escape justice too by travelling just far enough.

That would be something they could explore. They probably won't, but this episode is too dark for a lot of people to ignore, I think.

With Amy leaving and Meghan only gaining more power, I fear this is the kind of thing we're going to have to get used to.

There's discussion on the UK of E forums about the Sony movie and the studio's own comments show they know nothing about, nor care to learn, the shows history or internal characterisation.

It's downhill from here.

I'll likely hold out with more optimism ( ;) ), but I do agree that Amy's leaving is a downturn on some things. She wrote some of the best episodes, establishing some of the show's history. I just don't want the show to lose the same fun spirit it had in the first season.

Imagine if it had been Pinkie Pie who wanted to be in a rodeo and caused a bunch of barrels to fall down. There would be no pitchforks even though her capacity for disaster is much higher.

Just a badly written episode. They wanted it to be about misinterpretation of cutie marks and it ended up being about mob violence and it being okay to laugh at physically awkward people.

^ Also, fillynapping is wrong, but not to the level of "knocked over some barrels" wrong.

Did she really leave because of... death threats? I'm reading the comments on EQD and wondering why she jumped over to Disney...
