The Flim Flam brothers... They're based on Matthew Broderick's character in The Music Man.
ETA: Just finished the episode and darn it... it's good! And I loved that Applejack said, "I already knew this, so I didn't learn anything!"

Robert Preston is the definitive Harold Hill. If you haven't, check out the 1962 film adaptation of The Music Man starring him, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, and a really young Ron Howard. Blows the Disney version out of the water in every respect. 
I haven't watched the full episode, but I did check out a bit of the song. Seems pretty clearly a nod to "Ya Got Trouble" and Flim in particular does lay on a bit of Robert Preston's singing style in places. Loved this episode. Great to see all the character interactions, also poor Dashie not getting any cider over and over and over again. Fluttershy blushing, loved the Flim/Flam brothers designs, all in all, nicely done.
Also, I could have swore I heard Bon Bon speak in this episode.

Finally saw the clip of Trouble from the 1962 version. I can totally see the Flim Flam brothers in Preston!

She does, right after Lily screams she can't get the taste of the horrible ciderpulp out of her mouth. That Pony never catches a break.

Same deal with Lyle Lanley and "The Monorail Song" and quite a few other flim-flam man stories referencing The Music Man. Preston sorta set the standard for the type.
Okay, that was horrible. When the entire show hinges on it's lesson of the week, a fucked up lesson can completely ruin the whole episode. That's what happened here.
So we've got two ponies who come into town and offer to make cider at 3x the speed with 1/2 of the manpower at the same quality. Fantastic, right? Well, no, cause apparently the writers of MLP are pushing a "technology and innovation is evil" angle.
Okay, here's how this episode should have ended. After rounding up 9 ponies pushing themselves to exhaustion to barely beat out two guys relaxing on a couch, the Apple family realizes that they can update their cider-making process without sacrificing quality. They then enter into a partnership with the duo and make enough cider to please the whole town. Everyone wins.

Let me guess, you also thought Feeling Pinkie was an anti-science episode. Sometimes I think the fans need to take a step back and realize it's just a children's cartoon. I VERY good children's cartoon but a children's cartoon just the same. The lesson was "if you take your time to do things the right way your work will speak for itself" The Flim Flam brothers didn't do that by cutting corners and it cost them.
A little, yeah. However I still enjoyed that episode.
I get the message of this episode, but it was poorly delivered. The Flim Flam brothers were perfectly able to duplicate the Apple Family's quality while significantly improving production enough to satisfy the whole town. The only reason they lost is because they got desperate to win the contest after Twilight Sparkle cheated with that "honorary family members" thing to give her friends an advantage.
It's very irritating when I'm supposed to look at the Flim Flam brothers as the bad guys when I feel the exact opposite.
