I was about ready to call this the worst episode of the show. Rarity being hoity-toity is the least enjoyable trope in the series, and it's the one thing that actually feels like "a show for little girls" with all the negative connotations that go with that (come to think of it, it doesn't help that she's also the only one interested in dating, but that's another topic). Having her be stuck-up and self-centered for half an episode with nothing else was downright oppressive. Things picked up when the rest of the crew showed up, but I don't think it was enough to save the episode. And it was a bit of a drama-block that nobody ended up caring that Rarity tried to flake out on Twilight's birthday. It wasn't out of character or anything, but there seemed to be some set-up for a confrontation, like Rarity's entire attitude that she needed to hide putting networking ahead of her friends, or the drawing of the fancified dress.

Hence my reason for never liking Rarity, she's the dead weight throwback to the old generations hanging around in the new show, she doesn't really belong.

Oh, I love Rarity. She's actually rather complex, and I think it's why writing episodes for her seems to bear so much fruit. She was born your average Ponyville pony, nothing bad but nothing spectacular, and it's obvious her taste in fashion and design is more in league with the high end socialites, but she's a down to earth pony when she needs to be, but I feel certain that a fashionista with dreams of notoriety and fame is who she really is, so to have the Element of Generosity says something about her character. I don't know, I just love Rarity, and that's not bad considering when I first started watching the series, I wasn't a fan of hers at all.

I have to admit, I was severely distracted at several points during the episode. I can't imagine why. :adore:

Well, she's a great character. At first blush she seems shallow, but she's actually rather complex and fleshed out very well.

The episode got good, when the "main" mane 6 arrived. Before... well i'm not a fan of Rarity. The contrast to the other ponies is quite harsh.

They each have their endearing (and sometimes disturbing ) foibles. :D

Hot Wife was certainly a highlight of the episode, but Twilight stole the show after her arrival, just by being adorkable as usual.

Adorkable Twi... where would we be without her? :)

Does anyone else get the feeling that Rarity has been, to some degree, fighting her upbringing?

She was brought up whitepony trash in Ponyville, she went back to that at the end, so not really.

She was my least favourite pony in the first season, but I've really grown to like her starting with that episode where she was kidnapped.

She was brought up an average pony with an average childhood, but she wanted to be something more. She does try to get "above her raisings", and she has largely succeeded to the point where I think she's comfortable as she is, being a more culturally/socially astute pony in a regular town.

"A Dog and Pony Show". Yeah, that's a great episode. :D

Episode 19 is my youngest niece's current reigning favorite. Both my nieces love it and I'm glad. Being ladylike doesn't mean you have to be weak. A good message for modern girls. :D
