Heyward is hitting .261, so he's been quietly improving in that area. The grand salaam is just a nice bonus I really don't expect from him.

Also, with the Brewers doing what the Brewers do best, fading, the Cubs are now 1 game back.

I just saw a clip from last night's Reds game. Um, why are their uniforms an ugly shade of green?

I know the ESPN power rankings are pointless clickbait, but the Braves won 3/4 games against the Nationals, maintained first place, and still this staff thinks that the Nationals are a better team. I didn't understand Fake News until this week.

Power rankings have always been worth it... and the ESPN folks are notoriously biased.

Shohei Ohtani is on the DL with what has been called a Grade 2 UCL sprain, with the team saying he'll be re-evaluated in three weeks. Dude's going to be out for a while.

How many innings in Japan for him?

An average of 6.2 innings per game with that number heavily weighted down because he only threw 25.1 innings in Japan in 2017. Remove that and he averaged 103 pitches per game. That's not a number you can keep up when you rely on a splitter as your primary pitch.

Over how many years? Average for a Japanese pitcher, more, less? I know they can really abuse some of these guys before they ever see the MLB.

Over five seasons with the Nippon Ham Fighters, Ohtani threw 61.2, 155.1, 160.2, 140 and 25.1 innings. B-Ref doesn't have more advanced stats on its register without a paid account.

Tanaka was absolutely abused much more severely but Ohtani's arm was beaten up already at the time he began talking to MLB teams.

How does that compare to MiLB pitchers before they get the call?

Ohtani is getting plasma and stem cell injections to try and avoid Tommy John surgery. Jesus.

He's been a lot of fun to watch, but he definitely needs to rest. We have tickets to the Freeway Series next month. I hope he's better by then, because I'd really love to see him play in person.

I wonder if that's covered in the rule book or if the umps just had to wing it (as a ground-rule double?).

Under Rule 5.06(b)(4), the runner is awarded two bases if the ball goes under or through an outfield fence, so without checking the box score, I believe it would be marked as a ground-rule double, yes.
