MLB Talk - 2010 Season

Finally. Took all weekend but they got the job done. What an awesome feeling, and thank you Buster "Rookie of the Year" Posey.

I said this on Facebook, and I'll say it here. I'll give it to the Giants that they won the NL West. It's the team that's on top at the end of 162 games that gets the crown.

But...you're only there because of the Padres collapse. It took you until the final pitch of the final inning of the final game of the season to do it. You went 6-12 against the Padres this season. If the Padres had only lost 8 of those 10 games in their losing streak - they would have clinched yesterday. You could have clinched earlier this week, and didn't. You could have beaten them on Friday or Saturday, and didn't.

Sour grapes? Maybe. My team isn't there. The way they've played the last six weeks, they shouldn't go. But this Giants team squeaked into the playoffs.

I don't see the Reds, Giants, or Braves being able to beat the Phillies.

Congratulations to Atlanta and the Giants. It's nice to not have to wait any longer to know who the Philllies will be playing.

And while I'm pretty confident the Phillies will take care of business, I can remember plenty of other teams who sat atop the standings at the end of the regular season who faltered. All the talk of 'can any team stop them?' makes me nervous. I'm used to the underdog role.

I was really hoping for a Padres win and a Phillies win today. If that would have happened, the Padres would have gotten the Reds (who they won their season series against, and took 2 out of 3 last weekend). And the Giants would have gotten to Philly. I didn't want to face the Phillies in a short series, and was hopeful the Giants could have taken care of them for a Padres vs Giants NLCS.

*sigh*

Oh well. Braves/Giants should be an interesting series, because neither is dominating. Reds have been consistent the last few weeks, so it should be interesting, but, yeah, I think the Phillies will get the Braves/Giants winner.

I for one would like to see a Yankees/Giants world series. It would almost be like the rekindling of a very very old rivalry

I would hardly say that the Padres "collapsed" today...the Giants simply had the superior pitching and coupled that with some good offense. That's how every game of the season Is determined...one team was just better than the other. To say "oh yeah, well you only won cause we sucked" is pretty insulting to the effort put in by the winning team. And I would also hardly say that it came down to the last pitch of the last inning (although...isn't that what every game comes down to?) The Pads only had 4 hits and Wilson mowed through them in order, so looking back at It they had it won after Huff drove in Sanchez.

I know its easy to play the What If game with baseball...what if they had lost 8 instead of 10...but looking backward gets you nowhere and all that matters is what *did* happen....and in the end the Giants were simply the better team.

BTW the loss couldnt have gone to a nicer guy...Mat Latos Is a punk.

That would actually be very cool. As much as Phillies fans surely want a rematch, I would much rather have it be the Giants. For exactly the reason you mentioned.

My hope for a Rays-Twins ALCS lives on!

And my wife won't have to deal with the Fenway crowds when she catches the train after work for 6 more months!!

Didn't see the game yesterday, my oldest son was play fall baseball when one of th dads told us the score at the end. Most of the kids were jumping up and down. (Except for our two Dodgers fans...)

Although the best part was my son pitching a shut out inning right after that....

As far as San Diego, what a gritty performance this weekend. It didn't end well but a good season from a team that was expected to go no where when it started.

As far as losing streaks, the Giants had a 7 game one too. It's the ebb and flow of the season. This year it broke to the Giants, I'm glad they played at the end. It was a fitting way to decide the division.

As far as Latos, he's a young kid, talented as heck, with a microphone stuck in his face when he was feeling frustrated. The older vets will teach him about that. Live long enough and eventually you might have a chance to be quoted in the paper/tv. (I made myself an ass once...)

I didn't say the Padres collapsed today. I said they collapsed this season.

I told you that the Giants were clearly the better - they won more games than the Padres. There's no denying that.

But do you *really* think the Giants are a better team than the Padres, head to head?

Look at the Rays and Yankees - Rays were 10-8 against the Yankees. That's evenly matched.

Look at the Giants vs the Padres. The Giants won 6 out of 18 games. They only won 2 games at home against the Padres all year!

The Padres clearly dominated the Giants. But you don't decide baseball games on how two teams play one another. You decide it on how you play against 15+ other teams. And the Padres just couldn't do it.

The Padres improved by 15 games this year. (The Giants by 2 games). The Padres simply collapsed. Just embrace it Giants fans. If you were such an outstanding team, you would have owned the Padres (or at least played them competitively) this year. But you didn't. Just as the stats don't lie - the Giants are atop the standings this morning - they also don't lie that the Padres owned you guys this year.

Don't belittle what other teams do. The Braves lost 9 in a row and still made the playoffs. The Padres could have done the same thing with 10. The season was on the line and they couldn't even muster up a run.

My hope for a Rays-Twins ALCS lives on!

Even though I think the Twins would have a better chance against Texas, I'd love to see the Twins and the Rays in the ALCS. Hope the Twins can finally get past the Yankees- the Yankees have pretty much owned the Twins in recent years.

BTW - I won't defend Latos. I think baseball should be played on the field, and not in the newspapers. And if he's stupid enough to open up his trap, then he's just plain stupid.

But, nice try. The baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint. It really didn't come down to the game yesterday. It should never come down to a game. If the Padres had mustered up a run against Chicago earlier this week, then we'd be talking 3 way tie today.

How am I 'belittling' what another team did? I'm quoting the stats. Show me where I said the Giants aren't in the playoffs, or don't deserve to be there. I didn't say that. One more time - the Giants won the division, fair and square. They are the better team. I am not denying that.

What I'm saying is that, head-to-head, against the Padres - they couldn't get it done for the season. It just so happens that their final games were against one another, so it becomes magnified. If the two teams had been playing the Dodgers and D'Backs, for example, instead of one another, we wouldn't be talking about the Padres being unable to get it done against the Giants. (Still unclear how going 12-6 against a team isn't getting it done in any other situation).

I never liked implying that a game at the end of the season means any more than a game at the beginning of the season. Take any two games - whether they be in April or September/October. If the Padres had won those two, they wouldn't be getting ready to hit the links.

I will say this - if there had been a three way tie, I don't think it would have been fair to make the Giants and Padres play today. If the Braves weren't in the WC, there would not have been a game (the Padres would have gotten the NL West by head-to-head and the Giants would have been the WC).

So, if that's the case - why would the Padres and Giants have had to play to decide the NL West in a three way tie? Because of head-to-head, I would have thought the Giants couldn't have gotten the NL West, and could only have been a WC. So, I would think they'd have to play the Braves for the WC. Did they ever explain that anywhere?

Make no bones about it though - the Padres couldn't get it done. I don't dismiss that at all. The Padres *should* have won it, because they were in first place 3/4 of the season. How long were the Giants in first place? Does that question matter? Of course not. There's only one day that the question matters - the day the season ends. I'm not belittling the Giants - they ran the marathon and won.

If anything, I'm belittling the Padres. Yet again, they couldn't get it done the last week of the season.

So, the Mets' dynamic duo of Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel, the Brewers' Ken Macha and the Pirates' John Russell have all been handed their walking papers, along with the vacancies in Seattle, Chicago, Florida, Atlanta and Toronto, as well as possible openings in St. Louis and the Bronx. (Though no one with a brain expects Girardi to leave the Yankees.) Dusty Baker has been extended for two years.

Let the 2010 coaching carousel begin!

I just hope Atlanta finds someone who isn't afraid to pull players next year. I don't doubt Bobby Cox is the nicest guy on the planet, but he's loyal to a fault. I mean, who else leaves a guy in after he gives up 8 runs in an inning? The guy's not just gonna work things out magically. At least he quit pinch hitting guys with .098 batting averages.

I'll be pretty stunned if the Braves' new manager isn't Fredi Gonzalez.

Alpine, I don't think I've read you so animated :techman:.

I was worried that the Padres would make it in, the Giants just didn't match up well this year. It's funny the Padres this year are pretty much the Giants of last. Excellent young pitching, which can use more seasoning, and little offensive power. A couple of minors additions and that team will be a force next year.

I really like the look of the west for the next few years. Giants and Padres young and improving, the Rockies have some nice offensive talent and will play hard, the D-Backs and looking to build young, and the Dodgers will suck. What's not to like there?

As an aside I lived in SD for about 7 years in the late 80's early 90's, it was sad to see Tony Gwynn play for such crappy teams back then...

Agreed! I'm always quite satisfied to see the Dodgers lower in the standings.

A couple weeks back, when the Rockies were threatening, I was laughing about it. As much as I'd hate it, it would have been comical if the Rockies ended up passing both the Giants and the Padres. It makes it even sweeter that the Rockies and Dodgers, a month ago, were both about 10 back. Dodgers stayed there, the Rockies at least improved.
