MLB Pseudo-Season 2020: Roger, Dodgers

Jack Morris and Bill Mazeroski might like a word.

I'm presuming it's so that no playoff teams have an intrinsic home-field advantage during the expanded chaosball playoffs.
What's that saying about opinions and assholes?

Maz got in for his defense and Morris got in for postseason performances - particularly '84 and '91. Don't get me started on the HOF. I'm a small Hall advocate. I think only about 3/4 of those that are in there should be there. Harold Baines? He was a fine player, but not a hall of famer. The Hall should be limited to the absolute elite players.

Except the case for Jack Morris rests almost entirely on a single career-best performance against John Smoltz, and even then, no one would remember Game 7 of that series if Lonnie Smith hadn't been a fucking idiot on the basepaths.

Morris wasn't even the best pitcher on a lot of those Tigers teams, and he was far from the best pitcher on that 1991 Twins squad. He's in the Hall because last year's Veterans Committee was composed of a bunch of crusty old guys who cared more about the Game 7 ~narrative~ rather than the entirety of Morris' career, which was, compared to the rest of baseball in those 18 years, decidedly just a hair better than league-average. Based on career ERA+, the only players in the Hall with a lower mark than Morris' are Rube Marquard and Hank O'Day, both of whom had the benefit of playing pre-integration and in the deadball era (and O'Day was voted in for his merits as an umpire, not a player, anyway).

As a Braves fan, that still smarts.

I'll put it another way: The closest pitcher who compares, statistically, to Jack Morris is Denny Neagle. And if someone can put together an intellectually honest argument for Denny fucking Neagle to be in the Hall, fuck it, I'll drop down on my knees and go down on you.

Sources saying the Jennifer Lopez-Alex Rodriguez group is no longer pursuing purchasing the Mets. Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen now has the inside track.

Cubs finally showed some offense today, but all from the OF's.

Happ, 2 HR's. Heyward, 2 HR's. Hoss, 2 HR's (including a GS).

A shame Baez and Contreras are still automatic outs. But the Cubs did trade for a washed up DH from the Rays.

Deivi Garcia makes a start like that, and what do the Yankees do? Dump him at the alternate site. Go figure.

Padres have been busy little beavers in the trade market. 8 players brought in.

Including:
Mitch Moreland
Jason Castro
Austin Nola
today - Mike Clevinger

In the 14 they gave up are 3 top-ten prospects.

Wow, that is impressive.

I'm also surprised they wanted to get Mike Clevinger after he broke quarantine (more because of behavior than actually getting sick).

One thing that I have noticed lately is fewer broken bats.

Have they finally learned to turn "the label" down. or is it ta' hell w/ the maple?

According to the Baseball Reference registry, the numbers 86, 89 and 92 were the only ones never worn in the majors going into this season. And because of the Cardinals and Yankees, those numbers have now been used.

Not entirely on-topic, but the other night I was re-watching 42 in memory of Chadwick Boseman. Not the greatest baseball movie, but the performances were top-notch, and their digital re-creation of Ebbets Field was glorious (John C. McGinley's attempt at a Red Barber impression, not so much).
